Telecom Egypt’s Akil Beshir

Eng. Akil Beshir has been the Telecom Egypt Chairman for more than 12 years. On Tuesday, September 25th 2012, TE announced Beshir’s resignation as of 01/10/2012 as he decided to retire after years of significant contribution to the fabric of the telecommunication industry in Egypt. Throughout his career he has been a tireless supporter of the role telecommunications can play in economic and social advancement.

Education & Early Careers:

Beshir has his B.Sc. in Communications Engineering from Cairo University in 1966. He obtained Professional Diploma and a Master Degree in Management (MBA) from the American University in Cairo in 1979.

After graduation, he worked as demonstrator at Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University from September 1966 till February 1969. He also served as programmer, systems analyst, and manager at Al-Ahram Management and Computer Center (AMAC) from March 1969 till January 1975.

In February 1975, Beshir has become manager of computer science division in Giza Systems Engineering. In June 1978, he has become the Managing Director of Giza Systems Engineering till June 2000. In May 1983, he served as the vice president of the Egyptian Computer Systems. In November 1996, he became the vice chairman, Al- Ahly Computer Equipment. In June 2002, Beshir has become the chairman and CEO of Telecom Egypt. He passed on his executive duties as CEO in August 2009, becoming non-executive chairman.

Accomplishments:

Eng. Akil Bashir has participated in forming the future of Telecom Egypt for more than one decade, during which the company remained a provider of land line services and one of the most important pillars of the communications and information technology sector in Egypt.

Under the resigned CEO Akil Bashir’ chairmanship,Telecom Egypt has invested in submarine cables since the beginning of 2007. The company launched these cables at a cost of about $ 150 million, achieving nearly 176 million before the launch. The consolidated revenues of selling 40% of these cables amounted to about $ 220 million. 60 % of the capacity of the cables is still on sale. Whereupon, investment in submarine cables was a successful decision, given that it allowed the company to achieve high profits.

One year after Akil took office, TE Data, the Egyptian company for data transfer, has been established. According to statistics provided by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, TE Data acquired 63% of the market share of internet services.

In 2005, Beshir managed to list Telecom Egypt’s stocks in the EGX (ETEL.EY) and London Stock Exchange (LSE) (TEEG.LI). This transformed Telecom Egypt from a governmental body into a shareholding company with 20% of its shares registered in EGX. This transformed Telecom Egypt from being a governmental entity into a shareholding corporate with 20% of its shares registered in EGX.
