Sources in the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced on Wednesday that Egypt paid $US30 billion to foreign bodies in 2017. They added that the country is committed to pay over $12 billion in debts and commitments in 2018. Last year’s payments included bonds and debts to international banks, such as the African Export Import Bank, deposits and loans received from Saudi Kingdom, Libya and Turkey, in addition to financial commitments to the Petroleum Authority and the Paris Club. The sources stressed that Egypt has entered negotiations with several Gulf creditors to extend the duration of the repayment periods, which they have deposited in the CBE. Former Governor of the CBE, Ismail Hassan, said that Egypt’s foreign debts are still within the safety limits, asserting that the foreign reserve, valued at $36.7 billion, has not been affected by the debt payments. Egypt’s oldest bank, Banque Misr is negotiating with the central banks of both South Korea and Kenya to open representative offices there, its vice chairman Akef El Maghraby said on Wednesday. The bank is currently choosing the location of the offices in order to open them during the first half of 2018, El Maghraby added. In October 2014, Banque Misr opened a representative office in Moscow to facilitate Egyptian investments in Russia. One of the main targets set when opening the bank in Russia was to ensure good conditions for Egyptian businessmen who aim at investing in Russia. More»

Egypt’s foreign reserves surged to $37.109 billion at the end of December from $36.723 billion a month earlier, the central bank announced on Wednesday. Egypt’s foreign reserves have been climbing since the country reached a $12 billion, three-year loan programme with the International Monetary Fund loan in 2016 in a bid to lure back foreign investors and revive its ailing economy. The country’s foreign reserves at the end of December 2016 were $24.265 billion. The values of Egypt’s foreign reserves held by the Central Bank of Egypt during 2017: More»

The European Central Bank (ECB) may end its stimulus programme this year if the euro zone economy continues to grow strongly, ECB rate-setter Ewald Nowotny told a German newspaper. The ECB has said it will buy bonds at least until September and it is widely expected to wind down the 2.55 trillion-euro scheme, the centerpiece of its efforts to revive inflation in the euro zone, after that. Nowotny’s comments, echoing those of board member Benoit Coeure at the weekend, are likely to help cement those expectations. “If the economy continues to do so well, we could let the program run out in 2018,” Nowotny told Sueddeutsche Zeitung in an interview carried out before Christmas and due to be published on Wednesday. The ECB’s stimulus has helped pull the euro zone back from the brink of deflation, with price growth now comfortably above 1 percent. Even if the inflation rate is still expected to miss the ECB’s target of close to but below 2 percent for years to come, Nowotny said policymakers should be flexible about it. “It’s not easy to explain why 1.5 percent isn’t enough and 1.9 percent would be better,” he said. “That’s why I think we should not see that too dogmatically.” More»
