Egypt OKs draft resolution to form committee for human rights

During its weekly meeting headed by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Wednesday, Egypt’s government approved a draft resolution on forming a permanent higher committee on human rights.

The new committee will be tasked with establishing a mechanism to deal with and respond to allegations being raised against Egypt’s human rights record.

The committee would be responsible for following up on Egypt’s implementation of its international obligations that are connected with human rights while compiling and filing periodical reports.

The new body will also monitor, study, and address problems at the international level in addition to suggesting policies, procedures and recommendations to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

The move comes as a response to a directive issued by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to take bold action at the institutional and executive levels to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, in accordance with the related constitutional rights.

The foreign ministry was selected to chair the committee after votes were taken to decide on this issue.
