French FM to participate in Arab League committee on Palestinian meetings in Egypt

France’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault will arrive in Cairo on Wednesday for a two-day visit to participate with his Arab counterparts in an Arab League committee meeting responsible for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, according to a statement from the French embassy in Cairo.

At the Arab League ministerial meeting, Ayrault will tackle his country’s initiative for an international conference that aims to resume the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

Ayrault will also meet Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his counterpart Sameh Shoukry to tackle bilateral cooperation and regional affairs.

The French FM was sworn in on 11 February, succeeding Laurent Fabius, who also held talks within the committee in June 2015.

The committee was commissioned by Sharm El-Sheikh’s Arab League summit in 2015 to work towards ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and to advocate a two-state solution.

France calls for a greater role for the UN and the international community in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process to encourage both sides to conclude an agreement in the near future.
