Siemens Gamesa has secured a contract to construct a 262MW wind turbine in Egypt's Gulf of Suez in the company largest deal in the country to date, the company said on Wednesday. The deal is part of an agreement signed between Siemens and the Egyptian government to supply gas and wind power plants to boost the country's electricity generation by 50 percent. Under the new agreement, the Spain-based company will install 125 of its G97-2.1 MW machines in the wind farm in Ras Ghareb, the company said in a statement on its website. Construction of the facility is scheduled to be complete in mid-2019, with operations expected by the end of that year. The wind project is being developed by a consortium of French energy multinational Engie, Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy, and Egyptian local engineering group Orascom. The deal will also see Siemens Gamesa provide maintenance services for the facility for 15 years. Siemens Gamesa said the project is the first privately-backed wind project in Egypt, where all wind facilities had previously been backed by the state-run Renewable Energy Authority (NREA). In 2015, Siemens signed an 8 billion euro deal with Egypt to build power plants and wind power installations that would add 16.4 gigawatts (GW) to Egypt's national grid. The Egyptian government aims to meet 20 percent of its annual electricity demand from renewable sources by 2022 , part of the country's push to boost wind power capacity to 6,500 MW by 2026. More»

Egypt targets between 10 and 15 percent increase in its food industries exports to reach $3.45 billion by 2018, the country’s food export council (FEC) head Hani Berzi said Wednesday. “This year will witness an improvement in the sector (food industries) owing to the economic stability the country currently witnesses,” Berzi further told Amwal Al Ghad. It is hard to predict whether prices will hike or fall this year following the floatation of the Egyptian pound last year which resulted in price hikes in all sectors, Berzi said. “I expect there will be some stability in the prices of food products, yet with a limited rise controlled by market mechanisms and increase in production costs,” he said. In an effort to boost renewable energy in Egypt and establish Egypt as a leading player in environmental development, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy initiated a 5 billion pounds project to build the largest wind farm in the Middle East, locates in the Suez Bay, funding the project through investments of several international entities, reported Al-Ahram Arabic website. Mohamed al-Khayat, general manager for the Renewable Energy Committee, signed the first agreement to build the wind farm, through funds which will be provided by the European Union (EU), the German Development Bank, and the French Development Agency. The EU will be providing a €30 million grant in the first phase, out of its total dedicated fund of €115 million. The German Development Bank, meanwhile, will be supporting the project with a €72 million loan. The French Development Agency will be providing a €50 million loan. Khayat told Ahram Arabic that the wind farm “comes as part of the Electricity and Energy Minsitry’s plan to increase the reliance on renewable energy when producing electricity.” He added that the Suez Bay project is the first of many. Khayat also explained that the committee established an “atlas” to determine the best places for new projects, by measuring wind speed. The Egyptian climate, he says, makes it an excellent candidate for developing wind power due to its geography. On another note, the Renewable Energy Committee is conducting negotiations with a number of Egyptian banks to provide a 1 billion pounds fund for several solar energy projects under 500 Kilowatt.
