Local Omani construction firm Galfar Engineering & Contracting has been selected by the Tender Board to undertake the Phase One construction of the Batinah Expressway project at a cost of RO 138.929 million. Galfar CEO Dr Hans Erlings said in a disclosure notification to the Capital Market Authority (CMA) that the bid offer quoted by the company in its bid for the contract matched the figure announced by the Tender Board in the award of the contract. Phase 1 covers an initial 45-kilometre distance that starts where the Muscat Expressway ends in the Wilayat of Barka. Also as part of this package, Barka roundabout will be replaced by an interchange which will be linked to the expressway via a 7-kilometre-long interconnecting blacktop. More»

Dubai Turkish hotel operator Rixos Hotels yesterday launched Rixos Bab Al Bahr — its first footprint in Ras Al Khaimah. This is the hotel chain’s second property in the UAE and in the region. Rixos Bab Al Bahr Ras Al Khaimah is a resort with 627 rooms and suites, offering a serene retreat for relaxation. It offers 14 multi-cuisine food and beverage outlets complemented with leisure facilities that include the signature Rixos Royal Spa with a Turkish hammam, a children’s and teen’s club, a show amphitheatre and a nightclub. The Iraqi cabinet Tuesday decided to grant the Baiji gas-operated power station implementation contract to Egypt's Orascom at a cost of $363 million, a project that is supposed to take 21 months. "The cabinet agreed to a recommendation by the energy affairs committee to grant the contract to build the Baiji power station, of a capacity of 169x6 megawatt," according to the Iraqi government official spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh. Reuters quoted the Iraqi electricity ministry spokesman Musaab al-Mudarris as saying the contract envisages the construction of a power station in Baiji, 180 km north of Baghdad, and the installation of six gas units with a capacity of 169 megawatt for each. Dubai is ready to spend as much as $4 billion on infrastructure and construction projects should it be picked to host the World Expo in 2020, the emirate's officials said Tuesday. "The estimates we have of what other countries had spent on hosting such an expo in the past, range between $2 billion to $4 billion on projects related to the expo including developing of infrastructure and construction... The Palm Islands are man-made peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Arabian Gulf. The Palm Jumeirah consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers. It will add 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline. The Waad Mining City in the North of Jeddah endorsed by the Cabinet on Monday will receive SR26 billion in preliminary investments including the setting up of a SR21 billion phosphate company, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Ali Al-Naimi said Tuesday. The mall is part of a mixed-use development project located in Bellevue, Washington, that Investcorp invested in almost five years back. Prince Sattam, chairman of the Higher Commission for the Development of Riyadh (HCDR), chaired a meeting Tuesday with the higher executive committee of projects for planning at the commission in Riyadh. Ibrahim bin Mohammad Al-Sultan, chief of the center of projects and planning at the HCDR, said the meeting discussed many topics, such as the development plan for Riyadh. The meeting also discussed the procedures taken to face the phenomena of slums in Riyadh, and awarding contracts for work on some roads in the capital like King Abdullah West Road, intersection tunnel of Makkah Road with Salahuddin Road and the intersection of the eastern circular road with Urobah Road. Emirates’ Middle East operations will receive a boost this August as the airline increases its daily capacity to both Kuwait and Doha, adding a total capacity increase of almost 29 percent across the two routes. In line with Emirates’ rapid global expansion Qatar and Kuwait will each benefit from an additional daily frequency, bringing operations to Doha to six services per day and Kuwait up to five flights per day. With six flights per day, Doha has the highest number of daily frequencies in the Middle East region, followed by Kuwait. Both cities play a key role in the region’s business growth, attracting international investors and facilitating global trade. With a total of 46,430 seats available for inbound and outbound booking each week, across the two markets, these additional daily flights are well timed to support the countries accelerated trade and tourism growth.
