The rate of contraction in Spain's manufacturing sector was worse than that of Greece in May, according to a business survey. Markit's euro zone manufacturing purchasing managers' index for the whole euro zone dropped to 45.1 from 45.9 in April. Any figure below 50 suggests a contraction in the sector. Spain's figure of 42.0 was the worst in the bloc, dropping below Greece's level of 43.1. It was Spain's fastest rate of decline in its manufacturing sector since May 2009. "Things went from bad to worse in the Spanish manufacturing sector during May," said Andrew Harker, the report's author. "The ongoing lack of demand in the sector is mainly reflective of domestic problems, but the weakness in the rest of the euro zone was also reported to have weighed on demand in May." More»

Ezz,Beshay and Suez Steel companies to stabilize prices for the sixth month in a row, amid refusal of Retailers demanding to lower prices. Mohamed Hanafi , General Manager of steel manufacturing chamber at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, expected steel companies to keep their prices until the next June where Ezz Steel stabilizes at EGP 4600 per ton and Suez steel at EGP 4425 per ton. Hanafi added that the current recession facing the sector at this time support this stability of prices, indicating that the export of iron at the moment is an attempt by the factories to overcome the decline in domestic demand. “Around 60 thousand tons had been exported during the first quarter of this year, while the volume of steel exports during the past year reached 450,000 tonnes,” he added. The head of steel manufacturing chamber expected prices to be decreased within this year on labors’ strikes and protests that was resulting in major interruption of some factories for varying periods. Dubai Chamber study sees downward trend in food prices and stronger US dollar set to diminish pressure on prices UAE inflation is projected to increase gradually through the second half of this year, the latest study by Dubai Chamber of Commerce said. Base effects will become visible, particularly in the second half of this year, which will help increase inflation, while recent wage increases are likely to support domestic demand further, putting rising pressure on prices, according to the study. The downward trend in international food prices and the expectation of a stronger US dollar for the next 12 months, however, are expected to diminish pressure on prices, Zawya reported. In addition, with growth in bank credit and broad money still recovering, it is not expected that the monetary authorities will take any policy action. In fact, according to Central Bank officials, inflation is not a worry in the UAE since the sources of inflation are under control, the study states More»

A $1.5 billion project linking the power grids of Saudi Arabia with Egypt has been severely delayed due to the political upheaval in the North African country, according to people aware of the situation. "The Egyptians are really keen on the project and we are too, but talks have been kind of frozen due to the unrest in Egypt," one person in the kingdom, who declined to be identified, told Zawya Dow Jones. "Maybe after the elections and the appointment of a new government talks will continue," he said. The project, which aims to exchange 3,000 megawatts of electricity between the two power-hungry countries through direct current electrical lines, was initially expected to start trial operations in 2015.
