Representatives from Helwan University, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the American Bar Association (ABA) honored winners of a national Moot Court competition sponsored by ABA and USAID.  They also inaugurated Egypt’s first Environmental Law Clinic at an event that took place at Helwan University’s Law School yesterday. The activities fall under a USAID grant that promotes the development of legal education of young lawyers and law students in Egypt. “USAID is extremely proud to support Egypt’s law students,” North said.  “Their energy, skill, and commitment to justice are impressive.” Helwan law students Mohamed Yehya Fathi and Mohamed Hussein Abd el-Aziz won first place in the Moot Court oral advocacy competition held in Cairo at the National Center for Judicial Studies (NCJS) in April, 2012.  Fathi, who graduates this year, also won the prize for the best oral advocate.  About his experience with the Moot Court competition, Fathi stated, “I was delighted to have this experience. I feel that I have broken the barrier between theory and practice.” More»

The Kingdom Agricultural Development Company (KADCO) announced that it targets to add 6,500 feddans to its cultivated land in its Toshka Project, its area of which currently stands at 4,000 feddans, after the water pump station begins operation during the fourth quarter of 2014. It added that KADCO currently embarks on laying down designs necessary to operate the station. KADCO’s expansion blueprint is set according to a schedule and Egypt’s political events did not affect these plans for food occupies first place worldwide, said Daniel Leroux, KADCO CEO and Member of the Board of Directors. KADCO will pump giant investments to implement the target plan that includes reclamation of lands and expansion in cultivation of some existing crops whether fruit or field crops, KADCO CEO added. Leroux pointed out that the number of the project permanent employees increased to 140 and there are 200-900 seasonal workers according to requirements. He noted that KADCO not only expands in cultivating vegetables and fruits only, but also crops that provide fodder as well as plantation of grains, which will provide new job opportunities in the future. The industrial zone in Kafr Al-Dawar gets ready for investments with EGP 960 million costs, after announcing Dr. Mohamed Morsi as Egypt’s president as well as the expected stability for the country’s security and political states. Mahmoud Al-Sukkari, secretary general of Bahira Businessmen & Investor Association (BBIA), told “Amwal Al Ghad” that new investments are to be injected in 120 factories in the industrial zone in Kafr el-Dawwar. They target various productive sectors, the priority will be to the textile sector; also a factor for producing medical cotton with EGP 17 million costs. He added that the factories are awaiting either the administrative approval of the industrial zone apparatus subordinated to the urban communities authority, or finishing the procedures of the banks’ loans to save capital for the new investing project. Dr. Galal Moustafa Saeed, Minister of Transportation, has asserted that the ministry will be opening Phase I of Egyptian National Railways (ENR)’s medical centre development project before the end of this June. He added that the costs of carrying out the project – Phase I amount to EGP 150 million. The minister had held a series of meetings with the ENR executives so as to follow up the project updates. Eng. Osama Kamal, Egyptian PetroChemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) President & Chairman of the Board, said the company will be opening a new polyester plant within the first quarter of the coming year. The investment cost of the new plant will amount to EGP 1.8 billion. “The new plant shall annually produce 420 tonnes of the basic materials which go through plastics industries.” Kamal added “The new investments aim at promoting the Egyptian economy. Ismail El-Nagdy, head of Industrial Development Authority (IDA), said there is a fierce competition over financing 11 factories in the Technology Valley in Ismailia City with investment of EGP 1.3 billion as National Bank of Egypt and Industrial Development and Workers Bank of Egypt entered the competition. El-Nagdy said the Islamic endowments (Awqaf) agency, Qatari and Saudi investors, National Bank of Egypt and Industrial Development and Workers Bank of Egypt are competing over providing the finance. IDA has taken all the procedures needed for the establishment of these factories and is now establishing a 650-MW solar power generator to provide electricity for the factories. IDA will soon announce the body which will provide the finance and the mechanisms of financing the project of using white sand in manufacturing solar cells and water desalination. It is worth mentioning that white sand is exported at $20 per ton and after manufactured it costs between $100 and $200 per ton.  When transferred to silicon, white sand stood at $10,000 per ton.
