Saudi Arabia is banning imports of Egyptian guavas due to pesticide residues, the Saudi agriculture ministry said Tuesday. The temporary ban came after an examination on a sample of the Egyptian imported Guava was conducted that showed to have been contaminated with high rates of pesticide residues, said the ministry’s Undersecretary for livestock affairs, Hamad Al-Batshan, said in a press statement. In June, the Saudi authorities decided to ban the imports of Egyptian strawberries due to contamination of pesticide residues. Since a currency float in November, which roughly cut the pound’s value in half, Egyptian exports have been welcomed in new markets due to their increased competitiveness. Exports of Egyptian vegetables, fruits and legumes amounted to $2.2 billion last year. The main fruit exports include oranges and strawberries. A series of bans of Egyptian exports however has hurt the image of an import-dependent country seeking to step up exports and curb imports in an effort to narrow its trade deficit. But, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates had agreed in October to lift a ban on imports of Egyptian agricultural products. Exports could also help bring in desperately needed foreign currency that has been low in supply as a result of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that drove away tourists and investors. More»

Egypt's Sukari mine, the country's sole gold-exporting mine, has contributed a total of $250 million in revenues to the government since it started production in 2009, Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla said at a parliament meeting on Tuesday. Sukari, located in the south-easternmost region of the Eastern Desert, is operated by gold mining company Centamin, which pays a three percent royalty for operations on the mine. The commercial gold mine produced 551,036 ounces of gold in 2016. The government has said that it aims to increase the mining sector's contribution to the GDP to more than 5 percent. Mining currently contributes around 0.5 percent of the GDP, which El-Molla described as "shameful" given the sector’s potential for greater income. El-Molla also said that the government is working to identify the challenges facing the sector, adding that it lacks an "integrated and coherent investment system." El-Molla says his ministry aims to boost investments by overhauling the sector's administrative and legislative system. More»

The number of tourists visiting Egypt rose by 54.4 percent in the first 11 months of 2017, reaching 7.49 million, the country’s state official statistics agency CAMPAS said Sunday. The number of arrivals in November has risen by 55.8 percent to around 778,800 million from 499,800 in October. CAPMAS added that the number of tourist nights also rose by 178.3 percent in the same eleven-month period on annual basis to reach 81.61 million from 29.32 million last year. Egypt hopes the number of tourists will reach 8 million in the whole of 2017, up from 4.5 million last year, a government official told Reuters in September. Tourist revenues should hit $6 billion in 2017, up from $3.4 billion in 2016, the official said, despite a continued flight ban from Russia, traditionally a major source of tourists, after a Russian plane crashed in the Sinai Peninsula in 2015, killing all 224 people on board. Egypt’s aviation minister will travel to Russia to sign protocol agreements as early as Friday to finally allow the resumption of Russian flights. Russians accounted for a large proportion of tourists to Egypt, especially to the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh. More»
