ShopRunner Inc, the e-commerce startup backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd that styles itself in some ways as the anti-Amazon, more than doubled its users over the past year and hopes to do so again in 2015, Shoprunner's chief executive said in an interview. The five-year old online retailer's gains may allow it to win over more customers who prize convenience and experience over cost savings, while taking advantage of its Alibaba relationship to help American retailers sell to China's still-growing middle class. ShopRunner borrows some of Inc's innovations: it charges $79 for two-day shipping to Amazon's $99. And it has an express checkout akin to its larger rival's one-click-buying feature. But CEO Scott Thompson says ShopRunner aims to be more like an online shopping mall that showcases brands than an Amazon or eBay marketplace where the focus is on lowest price. More»

Facebook Inc. on Friday said it has acquired TheFind, a search engine that crawls the Internet to offer consumers a personalized shopping experience based on their social profile and the way they shop. The acquisition comes as Facebook FB, -1.11% has begun testing “buy” buttons that lets advertisers sell products through advertisements on the social network. “TheFind’s talented team has built a successful search engine that connects people to products,” a Facebook spokeswoman said. “Together, we believe we can make the Facebook ads experience even more relevant and better for consumers.” Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. The nine-year-old company will shut down its service, and some members of TheFind’s team will be joining Facebook where they will work to integrate its technology into the social network’s advertising platform, according to a company blog post published Friday. Google Inc (GOOGL.O) is in early talks to buy Bangalore-based start-up InMobi, in a move that would strengthen its offering in the increasingly competitive mobile advertising space, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said. InMobi, which helps companies target phones and mobile devices in their advertising, was launched in 2007 and claims to have over 1 billion users across 200 countries. It counts Japan's SoftBank (9984.T), an early backer of China's Alibaba, and early stage venture capital firm Sherpalo among investors. The source, who asked not to be named because the companies have not made the negotiations public, said talks were at an early stage. The source said Google had not yet detailed its terms and conditions for the deal. InMobi would likely be valued at around $1 billion, the source said. The Economic Times newspaper first reported news of these ongoing talks on Wednesday. Both InMobi and Google declined to comment. More»

Twitter Inc on Tuesday said it will buy Indian mobile phone marketing start-up ZipDial, reportedly for $30 million to $40 million, as the U.S. microblogging service looks to expand in the world's second-biggest mobile market. Bengaluru-based ZipDial gives clients phone numbers for use in marketing campaigns. Consumers call the numbers and hang up before connecting and incurring charges, and then receive promotion-related text messages. The start-up's clients include International Business Machines Corp, Yum! Brands Inc's KFC and Procter & Gamble Co's Gillette. The service capitalizes on a local tradition of communicating through so-called missed calls. A person may give a friend a missed call to signal arrival at an agreed destination, for instance, without having to pay the cost of a phone call. Such "unique behavior" was behind ZipDial, the start-up said in a statement announcing the Twitter deal. More»

AT&T Inc said it expected to record charges of about $10 billion for the fourth quarter but the non-cash losses would not affect operating results. The biggest U.S. telephone company said it would take a charge of $7.9 billion related to actuarial gains and losses on pension and post-employment benefit plans. Operating results will also include a $2.1 billion charge, as the company determined that copper assets would not be necessary to support future network activity. More»

Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg launched a free Internet application in Colombia on Wednesday as part of a drive to bring developing markets online, but remained mute on when and if the company would look to move into China. Colombia is the first nation in Latin America and the fourth in the world to receive the new service, in partnership with local mobile phone provider Tigo, but the aim is to push the app globally, Zuckerberg told Reuters. The mobile app, aimed at low income and rural users, offers more than a dozen tools via the Android operating system - like encyclopedia Wikipedia, weather websites, job listings and health information, as well as Facebook's own social network and messaging service - without the user incurring any data charges. It has already been launched in three countries in Africa, including Zambia. During his first trip to Bogota, the billionaire founder of Facebook said the app would spread very quickly as phone operators reap the benefits of increased revenue from new customers using the services. "Our goal is to make the program available across the world and to help everyone get connected to the Internet," the 30-year old Zuckerberg said. "We're going to look back a year from now and there will hopefully be a lot more countries that have programs like this." More»

Shares of Google Inc. fell to the lowest levels in over a year, and were within reach of their first bear market in 3 ½ years, on the heels of some downbeat comments from Wall Street analysts. Google’s Class A stock GOOGL, -0.73% slid 1.3% in afternoon trade Monday, putting it on track for a ninth loss in 10 sessions. The stock has lost 6.9% since the start of the year, and 19.1% since peaking at an all-time closing high of $610.68 on Feb. 26, 2014. Many technical analysts define a bear market as a decline of 20% or more from a significant high. That means a close at or below $488.54 would trigger a new bear market for Google’s stock. The last time Google’s stock suffered a bear-market decline was when it dove 21% from July 26, 2011 through Aug. 19, 2011. Analyst Jay Srivatsa at Chardan Capital Markets listed the Internet search giant as one of the biggest “losers” of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. The event had attracted more than 170,000 tech industry professionals, and 3,600 exhibitors, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, but no Google. “With its Google Glass product simply not materializing [in 2014], Google, which stayed away from this show, may want to pay attention to competing solutions from the likes of Vuzix and major investments on wearables from the likes of Intel,” Srivatsa wrote in a note to clients. “Absent a major product announcement in 2015, Google may have to rely on its search business for a while.” More»

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday will announce a renewed push for cybersecurity legislation after recent headline-grabbing hacks against companies like Sony Pictures and Home Depot. Obama will throw his support behind efforts to give liability protection to companies that quickly share information about attacks, but will require strict protections for personal information, the White House said in a statement. The White House first proposed cyber legislation in 2011. In the last Congress, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill, but the Senate failed to clear legislation. Lawmakers have struggled to balance corporate concerns about liability with consumer fears about privacy, especially following the leak of information about government surveillance programs by former contractor Edward Snowden. The government itself has not been immune from cyber problems. On Monday, social media accounts for the U.S. military command that oversees operations in the Middle East were hacked by people claiming to be allied with Islamic State militants. More»
