This spring, Taser International Inc won a small but high-profile contract to supply body cameras to the London police. But the deal nearly collapsed over one issue: where the video footage would be stored. In the end, the deal survived only after Taser dropped Inc as the data storage provider for the year-long project. The fact that Amazon did not have a data center in Britain was a deal breaker for British officials, according to Taser. The case is an example of the challenges that Amazon faces as it works to expand its cloud computing business, known as Amazon Web Services (AWS). In cloud computing, clients store and process data on remote servers accessed by the Internet, as opposed to storing information in local servers. Since Edward Snowden exposed the vast reach of the U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance programs 18 months ago, government agencies and companies around the world have been evaluating where they keep their most sensitive data. Some larger companies have grown wary of relying too heavily on Amazon's public cloud servers, preferring to store data on their own premises or work with cloud providers that can offer them the option of dedicated servers - the so-called "private cloud" model, technology consultants say. Facebook Inc is secretly working on a new website called "Facebook at Work" that would allow users to keep their personal profile separate from their work profile, the Financial Times reported. The new website, that will look very much like Facebook, will compete with professional social network LinkedIn Corp, Google Inc, and Microsoft Corp, the newspaper said. ( Facebook's new site will allow users to chat with colleagues, connect with professional contacts and collaborate over documents, the newspaper reported, citing unidentified sources. Facebook was not available for comment outside regular U.S. business hours. Facebook employees have long used the site in their daily work and the social networking site is now testing it with companies, the newspaper said. More»

Yahoo Inc is expected on Tuesday to outline cost-cutting efforts and give details of how it is evaluating possible acquisitions as it faces pressure from an activist investor, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person who was briefed on the plan. Yahoo is considering acquiring one or more large technology startups with some of the $5.8 billion it made from the initial public offering of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, the newspaper said. Representatives at Yahoo did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment outside regular U.S. business hours. Last month, activist investor Starboard Value LP publicly pressured Yahoo to cut what it referred to as a "bloated" cost structure. Starboard, the second activist investor to target Yahoo in the last three years, also said the company should quickly "monetize" its Asian assets, which exceed the enterprise value of its actual business. Earlier this month, Yahoo said it is reducing the size of its operations in Bangalore, India, the Internet company's largest engineering facility outside its California headquarters. It is also closing its office in Jordan. Yahoo is "streamlining" its operations in foreign offices, which might involve a combination of closing offices, cutting jobs and moving workers to its Sunnyvale, California, headquarters, the Journal said. EBay Inc trimmed its full-year revenue forecast on Wednesday, signaling a weaker-than-expected holiday shopping season for the e-commerce company as it prepares to split from its fast-growing payments arm, PayPal. EBay's report comes as weak economic data from the United States and China fan fears of a global slowdown, forcing investors to re-examine the world economy only just emerging from one of the worst recessions in history. "We've gotten indications from some luxury retailers over the last couple of days that times have been more challenging," said Scott Kessler, equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ. "There are a lot of question marks when it comes to the sentiment on spending of consumers as we approach the holiday shopping season." EBay shares fell more than 3 percent in after-hours trading. U.S. retail sales, which account for about one-third of consumer spending, recorded their first decline since January last month. More»

Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) sued the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, intensifying its battle with federal agencies as the Internet industry's self-described champion of free speech seeks the right to reveal the extent of U.S. government surveillance. The lawsuit, which Twitter said follows months of fruitless negotiations with the government, marks an escalation in the Internet industry's battle over government gag orders on the nature and number of requests for private user information. In the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for Northern California, Twitter said that current rules prevent it from even stating that it has not received any national security requests for user information. The messaging service said such restrictions violate the Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of free speech. "This is an important issue for anyone who believes in a strong First Amendment, and we hope to be able to share our complete transparency report," Twitter said in a blogpost. More»

Facebook Inc is set to unveil a new advertising platform to improve effectiveness of online ads, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday citing people with knowledge of the matter. The product is a redesigned version of Atlas Advertiser Suite, an ad management and measurement platform that Facebook bought from Microsoft Corp last year. It is expected to help marketers target Facebook users more effectively by measuring which users have seen, interacted or acted upon ads that appear on Facebook's services and on third-party websites and apps. The product will also provide a tool for marketers to buy ads to target Facebook users across the Web. Microsoft took on Atlas with its $6.3 billion acquisition of digital ad agency aQuantive in 2007. Unable to make it work for its own purposes, Microsoft wrote off $6.2 billion of the aQuantive deal's value in 2012. The world's No.1 Internet social network, which lags behind market leader Google Inc in U.S. market for online display ads, did not reveal how much it paid for the technology. Facebook counts 1.5 million advertising customers and the company's ad business saw strong growth across all of its geographic regions, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg told Reuters in July. Mobile advertising revenue grew 151 percent year-over-year, accounting for roughly 62 percent of Facebook's overall ad revenue in the second quarter. More»

Egypt has contacted a sister company of a US-based online security firm to monitor the country's cyber communications a few months after authorities unveiled a new campaign to keep  social networking sites under surveillance. See Egypt, the sister company of US-based Blue Coat, has already started monitoring Egypt's online communications, according to BuzzFeed News which spoke with several Egyptian officials. The company, which an anonymous official told BuzzFeed is close to the country's security apparatus, has planned to provide authorities with a technology called the Deep Packet Inspection which offers rigorous scrutiny by allowing tracking and providing statistical information. “Our job as a company is to give them the system. I train the government on how to run it and we give them the program,” Ali Miniesy, the CEO of See Egypt, told BuzzFeed Miniesy said the program, similar to other systems used by western authorities including the US, can be used to "to penetrate WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, or other programs if needed." Facebook Inc (FB.O) is prepared to spend billions of dollars to reach its goal of bringing the Internet to everyone on the planet, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Friday. "What we really care about is connecting everyone in the world," Zuckerberg said at an event in Mexico City hosted by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. "Even if it means that Facebook has to spend billions of dollars over the next decade making this happen, I believe that over the long term its gonna be a good thing for us and for the world." Around 3 billion people will have access to the Internet by the end of 2014, according to International Telecommunications Union (ITU) statistics. Almost half that, 1.3 billion people, use Facebook. Facebook, the world's largest social networking company, launched its project last year to connect billions of people without Internet access in places such as Africa and Asia by working with phone operators. "I believe that ... when everyone is on the Internet all of our businesses and economies will be better," Zuckerberg said. More»
