Fawry has recently taken part in collecting instalments for social housing unit deposits through the payment points of the distributing company in several areas across Egypt, said Ashraf Sabry, its CEO. The company cooperated with the Housing and Development Bank (HDB) for the collection of these instalments. Sabry estimated that this experiment to collect instalments is the largest in the field of electronic payments with the government so far. The company managed to collect instalments from more than 170,000 customers within 15 days as the company’s infrastructure is widespread around different parts of the country. The CEO aims to increase the number of Fawry’s electronic payment points to 70,000 outlets in 2017, compared to 60,000 outlets currently. According to Sabry, the company aims to achieve a 40% growth rate in the volume of its transactions in 2017, compared to 2016. More»

Sharp drops in smartphone sales for China's Xiaomi Inc will not have a major impact on the company as profit growth will be driven by sales from smart home devices as well as revenue from its software eco-system, a senior executive said. Xiaomi was valued at $46 billion in its last fund-raising in 2014 - making it briefly the world's most valuable start-up at a time when it was China's best-selling smartphone maker and looked set to make a splash worldwide. But last year it missed its global smartphone targets by 12 percent, while its third-quarter China smartphone sales have tumbled 45 percent, according to research firm IDC - raising doubts that the valuation is still warranted. Xiaomi's global vice-president Hugo Barra said the company's business model was not based on money made from handset sales per se and that it did not need to raise more funds or see any point in doing so at a valuation of less than $46 billion. Online spending by U.S. bargain hunters climbed to above $1 billion by Thanksgiving evening, according to Adobe Digital Index, surging almost 14 percent from a year ago and reflecting a broader trend away from brick-and-mortar shopping. At the start of the first holiday shopping season since the election of Donald Trump as president on November 8, U.S. consumers loosened their purse strings and spent $1.15 billion online between midnight and 5 pm ET on Thursday, according to Adobe. Traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, has started the holiday shopping season in the United States with retailers offering steep discounts and turning a profit. But its popularity has been on the wane given the emergence of online shopping and cheap deals through the year from retailers including e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc. U.S. stores are now opening on Thanksgiving to try and boost in-store sales, while retailers have been offering online deals weeks in advance to cope with lower demand and stiff pricing competition. Hackers gained access to sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, for 134,386 current and former U.S. sailors, the U.S. Navy said on Wednesday. Toyota Motor Corp said it aims to develop a more advanced electric-car battery "in a few years" that will allow the Japanese automaker to build vehicles with up to 15 percent greater range and battery life than they have currently. “Lithium-ion battery is a key technology for electrifying cars, and there is a clear need, going forward, for improving this technology and its performance even more,” Hisao Yamashige, a battery technology researcher at Toyota, told a media briefing in Tokyo on Thursday. Improving the performance of lithium-ion battery technology is a pressing issue for traditional automakers such as Toyota and new entrants such as Tesla Motors Inc because of its limiting characteristics. Producers of all-electric battery cars, plug-in electric hybrids, as well as conventional gas-electric hybrids are all striving to source or develop more advanced battery technologies to improve range, battery life and safety. Black Friday bargain hunters are being courted by Google, which wants them to try out its latest search facility. The tech company has made it possible to see how busy shops and other popular destinations are, in real time. A search for a shop now delivers a status update - such as "a little busy" - and information about how long people typically spend at the location. Google says it should help users navigate "Black Friday swarms", but one expert questioned its usefulness. "It could be seen as unwelcome by some retailers because if they are absolutely mobbed, it could put more people off from visiting," said Bryan Roberts, a market researcher at the TCC Global consultancy. "But in reality, Black Friday is a bit less frenzied in the UK than it has been in the US. More»

Microsoft is set to gain EU approval for its $26 billion buy of professional social network LinkedIn with tweaks to concessions aimed at addressing competition concerns, three people close to the matter said on Wednesday. Microsoft last week told the European Commission that it would still allow LinkedIn's rivals access to its software such as its Outlook program and give hardware makers the option of installing competing professional social networks on computers after the acquisition. The second plank of the concession is important because of the company's battle with the EU competition authority over the last decade and the policy of tying its products to block rivals, resulting in fines of more than 2.2 billion euros. The slight modifications came following feedback from rivals and customers, the people said, declining to provide details because of the sensitivity of the issue. More»
