Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced on Wednesday its first stock split and said it expects demand for semiconductors to remain strong in 2018, as it posted record annual profit driven by a so-called memory chip “super-cycle.” The tech giant’s stock split is the latest in a series of moves to bolster shareholder returns, including 5.8 trillion won ($5.4 billion) in annual dividends and 9.2 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations in 2017. The firm’s largesse has encouraged investors to hold shares despite concerns that the memory business may be peaking. The stock split will open the door to retail investors as well, boosting liquidity and underpinning valuations, analysts said. “The stock split comes as a surprise to me,” said Kim Sung-soo, a fund manager at LS Asset Management who holds Samsung shares, noting that Samsung previously had shrugged off investors’ calls to split its shares. Apple shares dropped on Monday after a report that the company ordered a drastic cut in iPhone X production. Nikkei reported Monday that the tech giant told its suppliers to reduce iPhone X production to 20 million units for the first quarter from the more than 40 million units target Apple gave in November. U.S.-based ride-hailing company Uber is now operating in the Nile Delta cities of Tanta and Damanhour, the company announced in a press release on Sunday. Uber’s latest expansion had been to Mansoura last May. “The expansion into Tanta and Damanhour ensures the presence of more job opportunities, supporting Uber’s vision in creating economic opportunities in other cities in Egypt through Uber technology,” the press release reads. In 2017, Uber generated more than 150,000 job opportunities, of which 50 percent are part-time jobs, and logged four million rides. “After the success of Uber in Mansoura, we have been on the look out for other expansion opportunities and finally rested on Tanta and Damanhour as we believe these two cities hold great potential in terms of offering job opportunities for drivers and providing a convenient and accessible transportation service for riders,” Uber General Manager Abdellatif Waked was quoted as saying in the release. Uber is also operating in Cairo and Alexandria. “We will continue to work towards our vision to complement and develop the transportation services in Egypt as we expand in different cities,” Waked added. Apparently, Samsung wants a piece of the chipset market share, as the South Korean company plans to expand production of its Exynos CPUs and find buyers for them among smartphone vendors. At the moment, Samsung is only fourth place in terms of smartphone chipset market share, as Qualcomm is in leading position followed by Apple and MediaTek. According to industry sources, Samsung plans to sell mostly chipsets for mid-range smartphones in an attempt to take on MediaTek. If Samsung's plans turn out to be successful, MediaTek may have a tough 2018. More»

European Union (EU) antitrust regulators slapped a 997 million euro ($1.23 billion) fine on U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm on Wednesday for paying Apple so that the iPhone maker only used its chips. The European Commission, which launched an investigation into the matter in 2015, said the exclusivity payments began in 2011."Qualcomm illegally shut out rivals from the market for LTE baseband chipsets for over five years, thereby cementing its market dominance. Qualcomm paid billions of U.S. dollars to a key customer, Apple, so that it would not buy from rival," European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement."This meant that no rival could effectively challenge Qualcomm in this market, no matter how good their products were. Qualcomm's behavior denied consumers and other companies more choice and innovation - and this in a sector with a huge demand and potential for innovative technologies," she continued. More»
