IDC said that shipments of the Apple Watch will more than double by 2021. The research firm said it estimates Apple shipped 31.6 million Apple Watches in 2017, but that Apple will ship more than twice that — 71.5 million units — by 2021. Apple has gained traction by focusing on health features, including heart-rate tracking and exercise apps. The newest model also added a cellular chip so that the watch can be used without a phone nearby, like when a user is out on a walk or a jog. More»

Uber is a taxi company and not a digital company, according to a landmark ruling from Europe's highest court. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled on Wednesday that the U.S. ride-hailing app is a transportation firm and not a digital company. The verdict is a long-awaited judgment expected to have major implications for how Uber is regulated throughout Europe. "Any ruling will not change things in most European Union (EU) countries where we already operate under transportation law. However, millions of Europeans are still prevented from using apps like ours," an Uber spokesperson said in an email ahead of the decision. Uber has long-considered itself an "information society service" which connects drivers and passengers through inter-mediation via their app. This subtle classification has helped to protect the multi-billion dollar start-up from national regulations and means it has been treated as a digital service operating across borders in the EU's single market. However, several European governments have argued the U.S. company should be considered a taxi firm, and just like thousands of others, it should have to comply with European transport laws. The ECJ's decision means Uber now faces national regulation in up to 28 member states. Greg Marsh, co-founder and CEO of onefinestay, told CNBC on Wednesday that the majority of Uber drivers "really value" the company and the ride-hailing service was clearly "wildly popular" among consumers. "If the majority of people want to use it as consumers and if a large proportion of the people who want to participate in it as drivers want it to exist then it seems a bit illiberal to say that we should be preventing it from operating," he added. Facebook Inc. said on Monday the U.S. government is making more secret requests for data about more users than ever before. The government made 32,716 requests for data from the company during the first half of 2017, with 57 percent of those requests coming with demands for confidentiality, the company said in its semi-annual Transparency Report. Those requests asked for data on 52,280 users, and the company provided such data 85 percent of the time. The number of requests was up 25.7 percent from the 26,014 made during the last six months of 2016, Facebook said. Those requests covered 41,492 users, and Facebook produced data on 83.4 percent of them. "Fifty-seven percent of the data requests we received from law enforcement in the U.S. contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited us from notifying the user, up from 50% in our last report," the company said in a Facebook post announcing the report. The report also contained redacted copies of five U.S. requests for data that the company was not allowed to disclose previously due to national security concerns. These national security letters were received from FBI offices in Michigan, California, Virginia and Florida between 2012 and 2015. The company also said it received 352,889 copyright and trademark complaints during the first half of this year regarding content on Facebook and Instagram. More»

The Trump administration has publicly blamed North Korea for unleashing the so-called WannaCry cyber attack that crippled hospitals, banks and other companies across the globe earlier this year.“The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible,” Tom Bossert, homeland security adviser to President Donald Trump, wrote in a piece published on Monday night in the Wall Street Journal. “North Korea has acted especially badly, largely unchecked, for more than a decade, and its malicious behavior is growing more egregious,” Bossert wrote. “WannaCry was indiscriminately reckless.” The White House was expected to follow up on Tuesday with a more formal statement blaming Pyongyang, according to a senior administration official. Contributing to the growth of the e-commerce sector in Egypt, Mastercard has launched its global digital payment service Masterpass in Egypt. As a simple, convenient and trusted digital payment service for faster and safe shopping at thousands of online retailers in Egypt, Masterpass will allow consumers to make intuitive and secure purchases across devices, channels and borders from a single trusted solution. The launch of the Masterpass service in Egypt brings a new level of convenience to local merchants in the country, who no longer need to invest in creating card-on-file solutions or manage complex security requirements for handling payment card data. Merchants will also benefit from the many features that come with Masterpass acceptance, including direct access to a larger consumer base through Masterpass’ global network, greater transaction security across channels, improved and consistent cross-channel checkout experiences for consumers resulting in increased consumer confidence, and implementation support by Mastercard. With Masterpass, consumers can now make intuitive and secure purchases online across devices, channels and borders from a single trusted solution. They can either use their existing wallets or simply register with one of Mastercard’s wallet providers in the market to enable the Masterpass service. Once done, they can start completing their online purchases, with just a click on the Masterpass button, eliminating the need to store their details with multiple online merchants. In addition, Mastercard’s multi-layer cutting-edge security and safety features ensure customers complete peace of mind when making transactions online. Currently, more than 6 million existing mobile wallet users in Egypt can use Masterpass through their existing wallets, with instant access to more than 360,000 merchants on the global Masterpass acceptance network. New users can simply register for the mobile wallet service with any of Mastercard’s partners. When checking out on the merchant website, users simply have to select the Masterpass check-out option, enter their mobile number along with their PIN and the one-time password, which they will receive on their phone, to complete the transaction in seconds. “E-commerce is a fast-growing sector in Egypt and the launch of our Masterpass service in the market is a timely solution that will leverage the massive growth in this segment to drive the country’s digital agenda and inclusive development,” said Magdy Hassan, General Manager Egypt and North Africa – Mastercard. “Masterpass is a revolutionary payments technology that reinforces Mastercard’s financial inclusion efforts in the country. By bringing Masterpass to Egypt, we are helping shape the country’s technology infrastructure by making it globally interoperable, without compromising on the trust our customers and end users have come to place in Mastercard.” As part of Egypt’s new national e-commerce strategy announced earlier this year, the Government of Egypt aims to increase the contribution of e-commerce to the country’s GDP and double the number of businesses currently selling online by 2020. “As a trusted partner for the Government of Egypt, Mastercard continues to collaborate with a number of entities in Egypt to advance the country’s digital economy. We see the launch of Masterpass in Egypt as a key step that will further accelerate the adoption of digital payments, while providing users with a convenient and simple solution to make safe and secure payments across channels,” Hassan added. In a strategic meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister Eng. Sherif Ismail last month, Mastercard President and CEO Ajay Banga reiterated Mastercard’s commitment to strengthening the country’s payments sector through strong collaborations with local partners and entities. Masterpass is now available in more than 40 markets internationally and the digital payment service is accepted by more than 360,000 merchants to enable online and in-app purchases, and at more than 7 million merchant locations in 107 countries that accept contactless payments.
