Egyptian Minister of Communications Yasser El-Kady expressed his enthusiasm for e-government approach asserting that every country should adopt it as an anti-corruption strategy. El-Kady said that direct contact between recipient and provider of a service creates a good environment of corruption. On the contrary, when services are provided online, there would be no room for administrative corruption. The minister added that e-governance is very common in foreign countries. Global subscriptions for smartphones will almost double by 2022, helping mobile data traffic to eightfold, telecoms network gear maker Ericsson predicted on Tuesday. The Swedish company said it expected there will be 6.8 billion smartphone subscriptions globally by the end of 2022, up from 3.9 billion in 2016. Alphabet Inc's Google and Facebook Inc on Monday announced measures aimed at halting the spread of "fake news" on the internet by targeting how some purveyors of phony content make money: advertising. Google said it is working on a policy change to prevent websites that misrepresent content from using its AdSense advertising network, while Facebook updated its advertising policies to spell out that its ban on deceptive and misleading content applies to fake news. The shifts comes as Google, Facebook and Twitter Inc  face a backlash over the role they played in the U.S. presidential election by allowing the spread of false and often malicious information that might have swayed voters toward Republican candidate Donald Trump. The issue has provoked a fierce debate within Facebook especially, with Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg insisting twice in recent days that the site had no role in influencing the election. More»

Vodafone Group PLC said Tuesday that it remained on track to meet its full-year goals despite reporting a sharply wider net loss, as increased competition in its Indian business prompted it to book a EUR5 billion ($5.38 billion) write-down. Vodafone, the world's second-largest mobile carrier by subscribers, said it made a net loss of EUR5 billion in the six months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of EUR2.3 billion in the same period a year earlier. It said revenue over the period fell 3.9% from the same period a year earlier to EUR27.1 billion and that earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were down 1.7% at EUR7.9 billion. It said both declines were primarily because of foreign-exchange movements. Vodafone said its organic service revenue in the six-month period grew 2.3% to EUR24.8 billion compared with a year earlier, driven by growth in Germany and Italy. More»

Despite the best efforts of Mark Zuckerberg to downplay Facebook’s role in the election of Donald Trump, the scrutiny of how fake news is spread on the platform has intensified. Buzzfeed News is reporting that "more than dozens" of Facebook employees have created an unofficial task force dedicated to addressing the issue. Buzzfeed quoted one member of that task force, who did not want to be named over fears for their job. “[Mark Zuckerberg] knows, and those of us at the company know, that fake news ran wild on our platform during the entire campaign season,” the source said. Facebook has not responded to the BBC’s request for comment on Buzzfeed’s report. More»
