Businesses in the Middle East are making gains in digital strategy and brand interaction based on enthusiasm, healthy investment and a sluggish European economy, according to experts, though the region has its own challenges in terms of client education.  Regarding the progress and outlook of digital strategy and monetization of social media Piero Poli -Havas Digital VP of Digital Strategy- said "Consumers are spending, that's the simple truth. We've got a bounce back of consumer of spending which is a lot healthier than from within Europe. I think from a maturity level the region may be 5 years behind, but being 5 years behind in 2012 is different to what that meant in 2005". The supposed gap between digital strategy in Mena, compared to Europe and the US, has not just been about marketing budgets, but bandwidth. Internet speeds have been boosted in recent years, allowing marketers to flex more creative muscle and apply online branding through even more channels, and video, in particular has become a crucial ingredient in the online campaign mix. Apple Inc's new iPad topped Consumer Reports' list of tablets despite the influential watchdog's having earlier stoked doubts about the latest iteration of the best-selling tablet by saying it threw off more heat when used heavily. The widely followed group that reviews a broad range of services and products -- including electronics and cars -- said on Monday it conducted additional tests on a number of tablets running Google Android software, including Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, and found higher temperatures common and not a cause for concern. Consumer Reports also confirmed the iPad's battery slowly discharged when "Infinity Blade II" -- an intense video game -- ran at full screen brightness, even when plugged in. It cited the higher power-demands of a faster graphics processor as well as a high-end "Retina" display. More»

Search giant “Google Inc” engaged in "Misleading and Deceptive" conduct by allowing misleading paid advertisements to be shown with Internet search results, an Australian court ruled on Tuesday. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the ruling meant that not only Google, but other Internet search engines, would now be held responsible for "deceptive paid search results". Google had earlier won a court ruling on the subject, but a full bench of Australia's Federal Court on Tuesday overturned that decision on appeal by the ACCC. More»

Microsoft is moving its European software distribution to the Netherlands from Germany after being caught up in patent disputes with mobile phone and tablet maker Motorola Mobility Inc. Microsoft spokesman Thomas Baumgaertner said on Monday “We would have preferred to keep our European distribution center in Germany, where it has been for many years. But unfortunately the risk from disruptions from Motorola's patent litigation is simply too high” Baumgaertner added that the move was already in progress. So far, the U.S. software maker's distribution has been handled out of Germany by Bertelsmann's services unit Arvato. More»

Major PC makers are jumping on the lightweight laptop bandwagon, hoping to shrug off the impact of mobile devices as they seek to return to the days of double-digit growth. Dell yesterday launched its first ‘ultrabook' — the XPS 13 — looking to cash in on the popularity of thin and light Windows 7 laptops. "Users are using the same computing device for both work and personal purposes, or influencing their IT department's device purchasing decision," Pearce Clune, marketing director, EMEA Product Strategy. Clune said the increasing mobility of professionals and the design-savvy, entrepreneurial market within the Middle East makes the system all the more popular. More»
