Facebook shares fell 4 percent Friday morning after it announced major changes to its News Feed Thursday night. Shares fell as much as 6.1 percent ahead of the market open, after closing just below the flatline on Thursday. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the social media giant, said that the News Feed — one of the key areas of Facebook where advertising is placed — will start prioritizing "meaningful social interactions" versus "relevant content." Zuckerberg said this could mean that users spend less time on the social network. Users will also see fewer posts from publishers and businesses. Investors are concerned that this could hit Facebook's advertising figures. More»

Loss of sensitive data due to breaches has become a key cyber security concern for businesses. An estimated average of over 10.5 million records are stolen every single day one. To help Middle East organizations prepare against inevitable attack, SANS Institute will host a cyber-security training event in Dubai from January 27 to February 1, 2018. The event will feature three courses that not only help security professionals protect their organizations against attacks, but enable them to proactively mitigate malware threats and breaches in their IT systems. Alissa Torres teaches the FOR526 Memory Forensics class. She says, “There is an arms race between analysts and attackers. Modern malware and post-exploitation modules increasingly employ self-defence techniques that include more sophisticated rootkit and anti-memory analysis mechanisms that destroy or subvert volatile data. Examiners must therefore have a deeper understanding of memory internals in order to discern the intentions of attackers or rogue trusted insiders. FOR526 draws on best practices and recommendations from experts in the field to guide DFIR professionals through acquisition, validation, and memory analysis with real-world and malware-laden memory images.” SANS Dubai 2018 will feature three six-day long courses, each of which addresses a critical area of incident response. SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling prepares attendees by arming them with knowledge and expertise on the same tools and techniques used by cyber criminals. By explaining commonly used exploits, the course encourages participants to think like hackers, thereby helping them uncover and address the most critical security vulnerabilities in their organization’s IT environments. In line with this theme, FOR610: Reverse-Engineering Malware: Malware Analysis Tools and Techniques explores the make-up of modern malware. This deconstruction aids attendees’ ability to derive threat intelligence, respond to information security incidents and fortify defences. The third and final course, FOR526: Memory Forensics In-Depth, is geared towards digital forensics teams, enabling them to uncover digital evidence and trace critical parameters of breaches. This is not only essential to helping mitigate the impact of an attack, but also prepares an organization against future attacks that would otherwise exploit similar system vulnerabilities. “2017 was a wakeup call to the Middle East IT industry with organisations taking note and ramping up their cyber defences. However, as oil prices, which largely dictate the region’s economic performance, continue to remain low, security spending needs to be strategic. At SANS Dubai 2018, we will arm security professionals with the skills they need to uncover and address the most pressing cyber security issues plaguing their organizations,” said Ned Baltagi, Managing Director, Middle East & Africa at SANS. A common feature of all three courses is that they will follow the classroom-style instructor-led format with emphasis on hands-on practical sessions. The event will be held at the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Beach and participants can register by visiting More»

Qualcomm said it's working on updates for products that are affected by recently announced chip-level security vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities, first disclosed earlier this week by security researchers from Google and other organizations, have already wiped billions in value from Intel, whose chips are among those affected. They have also forced many software and cloud services companies, including Amazon, Apple, IBM and Microsoft, to deploy fixes. "We are actively incorporating and deploying mitigations against the vulnerabilities for our impacted products, and we continue to work to strengthen them as possible," a spokesperson told CNBC in an email. "We are in the process of deploying these mitigations to our customers and encourage people to update their devices when patches become available." More»

A delegation of the Egyptian General Division of Digital Economy and Technology (DET) will partake in the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which will take place in Las Vegas, this month. DET is affiliated to the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC). CES is an annual international consumer electronics trade show that serves as a platform for innovators. This year the conference, takes place between January 9-12, is expected to attract 3,800 emerging companies from 70 countries. Egypt will participate through an official pavilion set up by the division in cooperation with the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). Nine Egyptian companies will participate, introducing purely Egyptian technology products. Head of the division, Khalil Hassan, said that his division has communicated with Egypt’s commercial office in the U.S. to arrange meetings between Egyptian and international companies there, in addition to mulling the possibility of providing some training scholarships to member companies in international technology companies. In December, Egyptian Telecommunications Minister Yasser el-Kady discussed with representatives of a number of emerging companies their readiness to take part in the CES conference. According to the website of CES, formerly the International Consumer Electronics Show, it showcases more than 3,900 exhibiting companies, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more; a conference programme with more than 300 conference sessions and 170,000 attendees from 150 countries. Technology companies will thrive from the hundreds of billions in cash parked outside the U.S. coming into the country this year, according to one Wall Street firm. "With the Trump administration and Beltway imposing a 15.5% tax on [repatriated] cash earnings vs. the previous 35% tax rate we expect a surge of overseas cash to come back into the US with large cap tech being the clear beneficiary for 2018 and beyond," Daniel Ives, head of technology research at GBH Insights, wrote in a note to clients Thursday. Ives estimates large U.S. technology companies have $550 billion to $600 billion parked overseas. He predicts they will repatriate $300 billion to $400 billion in 2018, with Apple representing $200 billion of that amount. He noted more than 90 percent of the cash repatriated during a 2004 tax holiday was used for stock buybacks and dividends. However, Ives believes companies will use 70 percent this time for capital returns and use the remaining 30 percent for acquisitions, investment spending, research and development. More»

According to a new report from South Korea, the company is aiming to sell 320 million smartphones this year. Other targets include 40 million feature phones, 20 million tablet units, and 5 million wearables. It's worth mentioning that Samsung's 2018 sales goal for smartphones is similar to what the company achieved in 2017. The report says that's largely due to saturation in the smartphone market. More»

AT&T announced Thursday it will roll out next generation 5G mobile internet in a dozen U.S. cities by late 2018. America's second-largest wireless carrier said it expects to be the first U.S. company to introduce the technology if its timeline is achieved. AT&T's announcement comes after international 5G standards were agreed in December by 3GPP, the body that develops and governs cellular standards. "We're moving quickly to begin deploying mobile 5G this year and start unlocking the future of connectivity for consumers and businesses," Melissa Arnoldi, president of AT&T technology and operations, said in a press release on Thursday. "With faster speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G will ultimately deliver and enhance experiences like virtual reality, future driverless cars, immersive 4K video and more." AT&T also said that it also plans on trialing 5G technology with businesses. The mobile industry has promised 5G would bring faster internet speeds to stream videos or download data. But it is also seen as a technology that can underpin driverless cars, allowing vehicles to send large amounts of data from their sensors back and forth. AT&T did not disclose which areas would receive 5G first. More»
