Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company will stop levying fees on donations to charitable organisations made via its service, though fees on some personal fundraisers will remain. "Now 100 percent of the money people donate on Facebook is going to go to the causes they care about," Zuckerberg said at the company's Social Good Forum in New York. "This is something a lot of you talked to us about for a while," Zuckerberg told the crowd, suggesting the decision came after lobbying by multiple charities. While donations to both charitable groups and personal fundraisers in Europe, Australia and New Zealand are fee-free, the levy on the latter type of donation is 6.9 percent for U.S. users and 8.8 percent in Canada, according to Facebook's own donation guidelines. The company also will create a $50 million annual fund to match charitable donations made on the social network, Zuckerberg said, and allow charities to access a "fundraiser API," or piece of software that will let these groups access Facebook features easier. Facebook reported revenue from payments and other fees of $186 million in the third quarter. More»

While Amazon has been busy announcing new cloud services for developers this week at its annual re:Invent conference, the company is preparing to talk about new tools that will make it easier for people to use Amazon's Alexa voice-activated virtual assistant in the workplace, four sources have told CNBC. The company intends to announce an Alexa for Business Platform, along with a set of initial partners that have developed specific "skills," or apps, for business customers. The new technology could well come in handy for connecting into teleconferences or adding data to enterprise-focused sales programs, sources said. It would also add more personalized features, like an enterprise security layer that identifies and authenticates different people using the app at work, one person said. Amazon is also likely to announce a new marketplace for the Alexa for Business apps, similar to the Alexa Skills page it already has for consumer apps, according to our source. The broader goal seems to be aimed at making Alexa a key component to office workers. Alexa is the subject of a number of break-out sessions scheduled for tomorrow. The names of these sessions have not yet been broadly disclosed, but CNBC has obtained a list of them. They give a clue as to what Amazon is thinking: "Bring your Alexa to work. Voice enable your company" "Building smart conference rooms with Alexa" "New skills for Alexa for Business" "Hack your office: Building the skills that help you at work" Three years ago, Amazon debuted Alexa as the smart star inside the Echo speaker. Alexa performs the work of understanding what people say and then finding the best possible answer based on what it knows. Amazon has released tools to accelerate third-party development around Alexa, and today Amazon boasts more than 20,000 third-party skills that people can install and then summon from Alexa. And Amazon has expanded its line of Echo devices and made it possible for other companies to insert Alexa into their devices. Meanwhile Apple, Google and Microsoft have been busy improving their own virtual assistants, broadening their support for third-party systems and making them more widely available for consumers. Like Amazon, both Google and Microsoft have been courting enterprises with their cloud infrastructure portfolios. But the assistants have largely targeted consumers outside their work lives. Google and Microsoft have yet to reveal major pushes of the Google Assistant and Cortana, respectively, into the enterprise. But earlier this year Amazon and Microsoft did say they would let Alexa and Cortana start working together. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. More»

amsung filled in for a patent for the under-screen fingerprint scanner to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) back in April. Today the company received confirmation that the patent got granted. In its entirety, the patent suggests that a smartphone could have up to 12 pressure points on the whole screen for the fingerprint to allow secure apps, contacts, and messages.According to the patent, Samsung is sandwiching the fingerprint sensor between the cover glass and touch sensor. The pressure sensor is positioned on the bottom, underneath the display panel. This will make it easier to restrict access to image galleries for example. If the authentication is successful, the phone will automatically show all the photos. If it isn’t, only a certain amount of pictures will appear. More»

Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp is offering to purchase shares of Uber Technologies Inc at a valuation of $48 billion, a 30 percent discount to its most recent valuation of $68.5 billion. The investment, which was approved by the Uber board in October, would also trigger a string of governance changes at Uber that would limit some early shareholders’ voting power, expand the board from 11 to 17 directors and cut the influence of former Chief Executive Travis Kalanick. The investment and board moves are supported by new Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi and come at the end of a year of scandals and change for Uber, including the announcement last week that executives covered up a major hack in 2016. Samsung Electronics shares dropped more than 4 percent to a one-month low on Monday after Morgan Stanley cut its recommendation on the South Korean tech giant, citing concerns that a boom in memory chips is likely to peak soon.A so-called memory chip “super-cycle” of increased prices due to demand for more firepower in servers and smartphones was the major driver of Samsung’s record third-quarter profit of 14.5 trillion won ($12.91 billion) announced in October, with investors focussed on how long it will last. Kaspersky Lab brought together company experts, journalists and Kaspersky Motorsport drivers to discuss current and future aspects of automotive industry in the Middle East region and worldwide.  Since modern cars become more connected and incorporate more intelligent technologies to make them smarter, more efficient, comfortable and safe, the growing risk of a vehicle’s systems being infiltrated or having its safety, privacy and financial elements violated, makes IT security a crucial necessity. Kaspersky Lab has been a proud sponsor and IT partner to Scuderia Ferrari for many years. The company also collaborated with Abu Dhabi Racing to support Daman Speed Academy to help raising the profile of motorsport and promote cybersecurity as an issue relevant to anyone using modern technologies – not only in Abu Dhabi but also in the whole Middle East region. “Kaspersky Lab has a lot in common with motorsport - we aim high and value reaction speeds and quality of service. I’m very glad to see success and professional growth in a sport that we support: earlier this year Daman Speed Academy driver Amna Al Qubaisi has taken a huge leap in her Motorsport career with a move to Formula 4 with the best team in the business “Prema” sponsored by Kaspersky Lab,” said Maxim Frolov, Managing Director for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa at Kaspersky Lab. Amna Al Qubaisi, who is the first Arab female to take part in the Formula 4, is adamant on pursuing her passion of becoming a Formula 1 driver. "I'm glad to be sponsored by the global cyber security company Kaspersky Lab, as this allows me to dedicate my focus on my performance on the road, while leaving the security challenges to the experts" said Amna Al Qubaisi, Kaspersky Motorsport Driver. Gartner estimates that there will be a quarter of a billion connected cars on the roads by 2020. Others suggest that by then around 98% of cars will be connected to the Internet. With each generation, cars incorporate new intelligent technologies for remote diagnostics, telematics and autonomous driving, remote driver assistance and infotainment. Car controls are becoming more and more complex cyber-physical systems with multiple sensors, controls, applications, subnets and communication modules that interact with other vehicles and their environment. Their functions can be controlled remotely, via digital systems. Because of this, connected cars are becoming more of a target for cyberattacks. That’s why Kaspersky Lab together with AVL Software and Functions GmbH have recently made a big step forward with unveiling a prototype for secure car communications to ensure that connectivity opportunities don’t turn into failures. It demonstrates the possibilities of interference-proof communication between car components, the car, and its external connected infrastructure, making connected cars secure-by-design. More»
