The controversial British photographer David Hamilton, best known for nude images of young girls, has died in Paris at the age of 83. He was found unconscious at his flat and died shortly afterwards. Police say the case is an apparent suicide. Hamilton had recently denied accusations that he had in the past raped some of his teenage models. He made his name in the 1960s with soft-focus pictures of young girls published by major magazines. The emergency services were called to his apartment in the French capital's 6th district (arrondissement) shortly after 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT) on Friday, where he was found unresponsive. Results of a post mortem will be available in the coming days. His death comes after a book published last month in which prominent TV presenter Flavie Flament described being raped at the age of 13 in the 1980s by a famous photographer, without giving a name. In an interview with L'Obs weekly last week, Flament named Hamilton as her attacker. Other women then levelled similar accusations. More»

Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed what they describe as a city that dates back more than 5,000 years, containing houses, tools, pottery and huge graves. It lies by the river Nile, close to the Temple of Seti the First in Abydos. Experts say the size of the 15 newly discovered graves indicates the high social standing of those buried. It is believed the city was home to important officials and tomb builders and would have flourished during early-era ancient Egyptian times. Experts say the find could be a boost for Egypt's struggling tourism industry which has been in the doldrums since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. More»

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres was lauded by the U.S. president for her influence on the gay rights movement as she received the country's highest civilian honour. Celebrities including Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Michael Jordan were also among the 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Barack Obama said it was easy to forget the risk Ellen DeGeneres took to come out as gay in 1997. He said her bravery helped "push our country in the direction of justice". "It's easy to forget now, when we've come so far... just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago," he said during the award ceremony at the White House. "What an incredible burden that was to bear - to risk your career like that - people don't do that very often. And then, to have the hopes of millions on your shoulders." More»

American Bob Dylan has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first songwriter to win the prestigious award. The 75-year-old rock legend received the prize "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". The balladeer, artist and actor is the first American to win since novelist Toni Morrison in 1993. His songs include Blowin' in the Wind and The Times They are A-Changin'. Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said Dylan had been chosen because he was "a great poet in the English speaking tradition". "For 54 years now he's been at it reinventing himself, constantly creating a new identity," she told reporters in Stockholm. The singer is due to perform later at the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas. Dylan - who took his stage name from the poet Dylan Thomas - had long been tipped as a potential prize recipient. Few experts, though, expected the academy to extend the award to a genre such as folk rock music. Former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion is among those to have previously praised Dylan's lyrics, saying his songs "work as poems". "They have often extremely skilful rhyming aspects to them," he told the BBC. "They're often the best words in the best order." Bob Dylan - the first person to win a Nobel Prize the same day as he plays a gig in Las Vegas. What makes a man who has only ever written three books a suitable winner of the Nobel Prize for literature? Bob Dylan arguably made the lyrics more important than the music. Last Friday Dylan supported The Rolling Stones at the Desert Trip Festival in California and his set included Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 from that very album. It is a song with the refrain "everybody must get stoned," leading to decades-long debates about whether it deals with Old Testament-style punishment or a call to smoke cannabis. Or most probably both. Few would argue that is one of his finest lyrics, but it does demonstrate the mixture of political questioning, religious exploration and interest in humanity which has been woven through his work for more than 50 years and has secured him this award. The result also demonstrates a real change for the prize. In 112 years, no songwriter has ever won before. The decision elevates song lyrics to being on a critical par with literature, poetry and playwriting. It's a big step away from the self-perpetuating intellectualism and elitism for which the award had been criticised. Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941 and began his musical career in 1959, playing in coffee houses in Minnesota. Much of his best-known work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal historian of America's troubles. Blowin' in the Wind and The Times They are A-Changin' were among anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements. His move away from traditional folk songwriting, paired with a controversial decision to "go electric" proved equally influential. Dylan's many albums include Highway 61 Revisited in 1965, Blonde on Blonde in 1966 and Blood on the Tracks in 1975. Since the late 1980s he has toured persistently, an undertaking he has dubbed the "Never-Ending Tour". More»

China and the West were in contact more than 1,500 years before European explorer Marco Polo arrived in China, new finds suggest. Archaeologists say inspiration for the Terracotta Warriors, found at the Tomb of the First Emperor near today's Xian, may have come from Ancient Greece. They also say ancient Greek artisans could have been training locals there in the Third Century BC. More»

Amancio Ortega, Europe's richest man and founder of global fashion group and Zara owner Inditex (ITX.MC), has bought one of Madrid's most famous skyscrapers for 490 million euros ($551 million) through his property investment arm, a source said. The purchase marks another step in the famously-reclusive billionaire' s strategy to build a property empire through Pontegadea Inmobiliaria, one of the biggest property companies in Spain, and his holding company Pontegadea Inversiones. The source said late on Friday that Pontegadea Inmobiliaria had bought the tower from Abu Dhabi tycoon Khadem al-Qubaisi, whose fund had exercised a last-minute purchase option from Spanish lender Bankia (BKIA.MC), its previous owner. Pontegadea Inmobiliaria declined to comment on the reported purchase of the tower - known as "Cepsa Tower" after the oil refiner Cepsa CPF.GQ that leases it - which along with three others dominates the skyline of Madrid's northern district. Ortega has bought properties in London's Mayfair and Oxford Street, along with other properties in prime locations in New York, Madrid and Seoul. He rents out much of the space to Inditex stories like Zara, but also to rivals such as H&M (HMb.ST). Ortega, who turned 80 this year, is the second richest man in the world with a fortune totaling $72.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine in July, behind Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) co-founder Bill Gates. Pontegadea Inmobiliaria booked assets of 6.06 billion euros at the end of 2015, up 8.3 percent from the previous year. More»

Angelina Jolie is being consoled by her former co-star Johnny Depp in the wake of her split from Brad Pitt, it's been claimed. The mum-of-six, 41, and Johnny starred together in romantic thriller Tourist back in 2009 and are said to have remained friends ever since. The pair also share the same divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, who represented Johnny through his divorce from estranged wife Amber Heard. An actor has been found murdered at the rented home of Canadian talk-show host George Stroumboulopoulos in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, police and the TV personality said on Friday. The body of Richard Hong, 41, was found at the house by officers responding to reports of a burglary there shortly after 2 a.m. PT (0900 GMT), said Officer Norma Eisenman, a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman. "Officers were directed to a male, the apparent victim of a homicide," Eisenman said, adding that witnesses reported seeing a man in a black jacket fleeing the area on foot. That suspect remained at large on Friday evening despite a search of the neighborhood using dogs and a helicopter. More»
