When people develop diabetes early in life they may also be more likely to experience heart problems in middle age, a study suggests. Cardiovascular disease has long been linked to diabetes in older adults. The new study, however, offers fresh evidence that getting diabetes as a younger adult may exacerbate or accelerate the erosion of heart function as people age. “Diabetes is toxic to the heart since it affects many important components of the machinery,” said Dr. Genevieve Derumeaux, a researcher at Henri Mondor Hospital in Creteil, France and author of an editorial accompanying the study. In particular, diabetes can damage the left ventricle, the bottom left chamber of the heart responsible for pushing oxygen-rich blood out into the circulatory system, Derumeaux said by email. Over time, diabetes can make it harder for the chamber to fill with blood and pump blood out into the body. More»

The world's largest indoor theme park is set to open in Dubai this month to lure back some of the tourists and residents who often flee abroad during the scorching desert summer. In a sandy suburb beyond Dubai's concrete jungle and pockets of artificially green spaces, IMG Worlds of Adventure's boxy exterior belies a 140,000-square metre (1.5 million-square foot) air-conditioned cathedral of entertainment teeming with animatronic dinosaurs, roller coasters, Marvel superheroes and Cartoon Network characters. Zombies pop out from dark corners of a haunted house and the Velociraptor coaster throttles passengers within a misty simulated rain forest dubbed the Lost Valley. More»

The market is booming in apps which offer women the chance to monitor the cycles of their monthly periods. There are thought to have been as many as 200m downloads of period tracking apps worldwide. But a leading UK medical royal college has warned that women should not rely on them as a form of contraception. And privacy campaigners say users should be wary of what data they might unwittingly be sharing when they download some apps. A search for period tracking apps will quickly bring up dozens of offerings - some with charts, others illustrated with pink tulips or lilac flowers. In the health and fitness category, period trackers come second only to apps which monitor running. More»

The mayor of Cannes in France has banned full-body swimsuits, or "burkinis", from the French city's beaches. David Lisnar issued the ordinance on the grounds that burkinis, which are popular with Muslim women, "could risk disrupting public order while France was the target of terrorist attacks". He also said burkinis were a "symbol of Islamic extremism" which are "not respectful of [the] good morals and secularism" upon which the French state was founded. Muslim women from around the world have been quick to react to news of the ban. "This is just an Islamophobic attack on Muslim women in Cannes," Aysha Ziauddin, who lives in Norfolk, told the BBC. An experimental pill could help adults with severe asthma, an early study in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal suggests. In the small trial, patients who were given the drug, known as Fevipiprant, had less inflammation in their airways. And some patients with uncontrolled asthma felt their symptoms improved. Charity Asthma UK said the research showed "massive promise and should be greeted with cautious optimism". More than five million people in the UK have asthma, a long-term condition that affects the airways in the lungs and can cause a cough, wheezing and breathlessness. For most people the right treatment - for example, inhalers - can help control it, but some people have more persistent symptoms. More»

Getting young children into bed before 8 p.m. might reduce the risk of being obese in later life, suggests new research published in the Journal of Pediatrics. According to researchers from The Ohio State University College of Public Health, putting preschoolers to bed later in the evening, especially after 9 p.m., is linked to a higher risk of becoming obese. To assess the effect of varying bedtimes, the team looked at data from 977 preschoolers who were part of the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, a project that followed healthy babies born at 10 different U.S. sites in 1991. Bedtimes for the children, who were aged around 4.5, were split into three categories. Around a quarter of the children went to bed at 8 p.m. or earlier, around half between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., and the remaining quarter after 9 p.m. More»

Christian Dior (DIOR.PA), one of the world's biggest and most famous fashion brands, is struggling to find a creative director more than six months after the abrupt departure of Raf Simons. People familiar with the discussions say part of the reason his seat is still vacant is the limited control offered by the 70-year-old label compared with similar roles at rivals such as Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Coach. "Often when a creative director leaves, it is because he did not get enough control," said one fashion communications guru who has worked for big brands including Givenchy, and who declined to be named. Simons is expected to get much more leeway at Calvin Klein, part of PVH Corp (PVH.N), where he should start working in a few months, fashion industry sources have said. Adding to its woes, Dior's sales growth has stalled in recent months, reflecting a fall in tourism to Europe after the Paris and Brussels attacks and weaker demand in some key Asian markets. Main shareholder Bernard Arnault, France's richest man, wants a proven quantity to steer the label famous for its cinch-waisted Bar jacket, head-hunters and fashion executives say, but the talent pool of potential replacements is small. A further problem is that most designers are prevented by their contracts from working for a rival for up to a year. More»

Language is given to us so that we may corrupt it. Like that time we got rid of the word thou in the 18th century. Or cut off a bit of the word obviously and started saying obvs instead, or redefined banger, so it didn’t even have anything to do with sausages anymore (though like sausages, banger probably has a shelf-life). We use words and return them warped. Sometimes the mutation never leaves the safety of a relationship or friendship group (“Me and my mates call each other Moogs, haha”). But frequently the mutation sticks. We have selfie. We have selfie stick. Unorganised. Literally no rules for ‘literally.’ Text as a verb. Can and will instead of ought and shall. The near loss of whom. The complete loss of ye and thou. In short, we have the fact that English once looked like this: Fæder ūre þū þe eart on heofonum. And now looks like this: She was lit AF. It didn’t take Ahmed’s classmates long to realise he was different. While the other five year olds were boisterous and playful, he was reserved. He sat alone and did not talk much. Puzzled and a little disturbed, his fellow pupils told their parents about the strange boy who shared their classroom but seemed to inhabit a separate world. Two months after Ahmed began attending the school, the headmistress summoned his father, Nabil Emara. “The parents had complained to the school management that they paid a lot of money to this school and didn’t want their children mingling with a weird classmate,” Emara says. What these parents did not understand was that Ahmed, now 22, had autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder almost unheard of in Egypt at the time. “The headmistress tried to explain the situation but they did not want my son among their children,” Emara says.
