Egyptian world champions Mohamed El Shorbagy and Nour El Sherbiny be hosting a Q&A session on Twitter on Monday, April 23, at 6pm and 7pm Cairo time respectively via the hashtags #AskShorbagy and #AskSherbini during El Gouna International Squash Open. Shorbagy and Sherbini, who have been active on Twitter since 2011 and 2009 respectively, will be revealing exclusive details about their future goals this year, and answering any additional questions by their followers. Sherbini is no stranger to Twitter Q&As. She participated in one last year on April 9th, in El Gouna, Red Sea. In her short career thus far, Sherbini, born in 1995, is one of the most intriguing female players shaping Egyptian history at both the World Championship and British Open on the PSA World Tour. She became the youngest ever World Junior Champion in 2009 and in June of that year, Sherbini claimed the title at just 13-years-old making her the youngest ever finalist to win the runner-up position at the Miro Classic tournament. This will be Shorbagy’s first ever Twitter Q&A, which makes it an exciting opportunity for his fans to connect from all around the globe. Shorbagy, born in 1991, topped the Squash world ranking scores in November 2014 and in March 2018. Since joining the PSA World Tour in 2006 as a 15-year old school boy, under the tutelage of the legendary Jonah Barrington, Mohamed ElShorbagy emerged as one of the most talented players in the circuit. The Alexandria-born star rose to prominence in 2007 after he became the first player in history to secure a maiden PSA World Tour title at a five-star event. The athletes will announce the Q&A through their Twitter accounts using a relevant hashtag similar to those used in other Q&As. Fans can then directly pose their queries by including a question and the hashtag in their Tweets, prior to the live Q&A. During the live session, the athletes will answer the questions via video or text Tweets. Egyptian football sensation and Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has been crowned the top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues for the 2017/2018 season, overtaking football legend Lionel Messi with a four goal difference (28-24). The feat was achieved after Salah scored his first super hat-trick on Saturday against British team Watford, granting Liverpool a 5-0 win in the 31st round of the Premier League. On the top-five list, Salah and Messi are followed by Ciro Immobile, Harry Kane and Einson Cavani who all tie with Messi at 24 goals, followed by Lewandowski at 23 goals. This puts Salah as one of the favorites for the prestigious European Golden Shoe for the season 2017/18. Besides his four-goal-in-a-one-match achievement, Salah assisted in a fifth goal by Liverpool, thus further establishing himself as the season’s top scorer with a comfortable four-goal-lead over his nearest competitor. Salah has never before scored a super hat-trick, neither with the Egyptian national team nor abroad. But the 26-year-old has previously scored two regular hat-tricks (three goals) during his career. The first one was in 2013 with the Egyptian national team, when he scored three goals against Zimbabwe in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification, granting Egypt a 4-2 win. Salah’s second hat-trick came in a match between Roma against Bologna in 2016, as part of the Italian Serie A season 2016-2017, granting Roma a 3-0 win. Salah’s achievment puts him in league with Liverpool’s legends, as he now becomes the fourth Liverpool player to score four goals in a single Premier League game following Robbie Fowler (vs. Bolton & Middlesbrough), Michael Owen (vs. Nottingham Forest & West Brom) and Luis Suarez (vs. Norwich) The match score also puts Liverpool in a current standing of third place in the Premier League, behind Manchester City and Manchester United. Salah is one goal away from Didier Drogba, who scored 29 goals in a single season, to become the African player to score the most goals in the English Premier League. Among Salah’s other achievements are: BBC’s African Player of the Year title in 2017, Best African Player in February (2018) title by France Football and becoming the fourth African player to score more than 20 goals in one season of the English Premier League (EPL). Egypt's High State Security Prosecution ordered on Sunday the detention of four members of the hardcore Ahly fan group Ultras Ahlawy for 15 days pending investigations into clashes that erupted last Tuesday at Cairo Stadium during an African Champions League game. The clashes occurred during a football game between Ahly and Gabon's C.F. Mounana in Africa's blue-riband club competition. Some in the media have blamed the clashes – which broke out between spectators and security forces at Cairo Stadium – on Ultras Ahlawy, who said in a statement on Facebook that an “irresponsible minority" was responsible for the violence. The four Ultras Ahlawy members are facing charges of displaying force, inciting riots and violence, destruction of public property, and possessing weapons and explosives. Security forces said that the number of fans that entered Cairo Stadium during the game exceeded limit for the number of spectators allowed to attend the match. Security authorities had allowed 5,000 Ahly fans to attend the match. The prosecutor-general has said that the clashes were a matter of “national security,” though he stressed that the incident was in no way connected to Ahly club. Football fans have been banned from domestic league games in Egypt since February 2012, when over 70 Ahly supporters died in deadly clashes at Port Said Stadium. The ban was briefly lifted in January 2015, but was immediately re-imposed after 20 Zamalek fans died in a stampede when police used tear gas to disperse crowds lined up to attend an Egyptian league game against Enppi. In the past five years, authorities have permitted a limited number of fans to attend African games and national team matches, as per FIFA rules. In May 2015, a court of urgent matters outlawed Ultras fan clubs. More»

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has hailed in-form teammate Egypt's Mohamed Salah as the Premier League's player of this season, insisting that the Egyptian's previous sting at Chelsea helped in his recent eye-catching displays. "Mo has been incredible," Henderson was quoted as saying by the Express on Wednesday. "I think playing in the Premier League before with Chelsea helped him because he knew what to expect of the physical demands in English football," he added. Salah joined Chelsea in 2014 from Swiss side Basel FC, but the experience was not a fruitful one; he only scored twice in 19 league appearances before leaving to Fiorentina in 2015. "From the moment he linked up with us in pre-season, you thought 'this lad can play' – but since then he's kicked on again, and he's going from strength to strength," Henderson explained. "Confidence has played a big part in that, and he’s playing full of confidence now." Salah, who joined Liverpool last summer from the Serie A side Roma, has taken the Premier League by storm this season, scoring 23 goals to take his overall tally to 31 goals in 37 appearances  in all competitions. The Pharaohs star is the second of the Premiere League's two top scorers, just one behind leading scorer Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur. The 25-year-old winger, who spent two-and-a-half seasons in Italy's Serie A playing for Fiorentina and AS Roma after departing Chelsea, could be the hero of the Premiere League this season according to Henderson. "He's scored so many goals, in so many different ways, and he's been a massive influence for us. If he keeps performing at his current level, he's definitely up there for the Premier League's player of the season," said the Liverpool captain. "Top players are quick to develop an understanding on the pitch in terms of their movement, and the thing I really like about the three of them – Firmino, Salah, Mane – is that they don’t really care who scores the goals. "A lot of strikers are selfish by nature, but they enjoy each other’s success and they appreciate the team giving them a platform to make things happen in the final third," he concluded. Liverpool currently lie third in the Premiere League table with 57points, 15 behind leaders Manchester City. More»

Chants from Liverpool fans of the “Egyptian King” Mohamed Salah, the reds winger, have generated widespread reactions, following a match between Liverpool and Porto in the last 16 round of the Champions League last week. Some English fans chanted that they will convert to Islam if Mo Salah continues to shine and scores more goals, and have no objections to going to a mosque. Liverpool fans gathered in Porto sung after the match: “If he’s good enough for you, he’s good enough for me.. If he scores another few then I’ll be Muslim too.. He’s sitting in a mosque, that’s where I want to be.” The majority of Liverpool fans supported the chant on the official pages of the English club on social networking sites, and expressed their happiness with the Egyptian star. In his first season, Salah has scored 30 goals, only one goal behind the Uruguayan Luis Suarez, who scored 31 goals in the season 2013-2014. Salah is competing this season with Harry Kane, striker of Tottenham Hotspur, as the top goal scorer in the English league, which is an achievement not reached by an Arab or Egyptian player before. Salah was crowned the best left-footer in Premier League history earlier this month after scoring against Southhampton. This means Salah needs one more goal to break Robbie Fowler’s record of 19 left-foot goals, a record set in 1994/1995, according to the official Premier League website. Salah has had an amazing past year, from single handedly carrying the national Egyptian team to the World Cup to winning BBC’s Best African Footballer of the Year along with several other awards. Cairo's ailing giants Zamalek suffered their sixth defeat of the season after a 1-0 loss to Masry in the Egyptian Premier League in Alexandria on Wednesday, losing ground in the race to book a spot in one of the two main African competitions. Playmaker Islam Eissa headed home the winner just past the hour mark as Masry, whose coach Hossam Hassan was absent due to a touchline ban imposed on him for making an obscene arm gesture in a previous match, avenged their 2-1 defeat by Zamalek in the reverse fixture in September. Zamalek slumped to their second defeat in four matches under new coach Ehab Galal. They have won only once since the 50-year-old took over earlier this month. The White Knights are fifth in the table with 32 points, five behind third-placed Masry who occupy an African Confederation Cup spot. Ismaily have 42 points in second place, which earns an African Champions League qualification. Zamalek played with an unfamiliar three-man backline, with full-backs Ahmed Aboul-Fotouh and Youssef Ibrahim given attacking roles down the flank. But Zamalek were sluggish upfront, failing to slice open Masry's defence in a first-half with few goal-scoring opportunities. Masry had the first chance after 13 minutes when Eissa raced clear but a one-handed save from keeper Ahmed El-Shennawi denied him. He tried to fire home on the rebound his effort went across the six-yard box. Zamalek's only opportunity came two minutes before the break when Aboul-Fotouh skipped past his challenger after a pull-back from Ghanaian striker Nana Poku, who made his debut following his January arrival, but his attempted cross was palmed away by the keeper. The only highlight of a dour second half was in the 61st minute when the diminutive Eissa outjumped his marker to head home an inviting cross from the right, handing Masry a valuable win. More»

The Masry coach stated to the media that he was simply celebrating the victory over Petrojet. Hassan said he is prepared to apologise if his actions offended anyone. More»

Egypt's ailing giants Zamalek appointed Enppi's Ehab Galal as their new coach, the Cairo club announced on Saturday. Galal ended his Enppi contract after paying a buy-out clause, Zamalek said in a statement on their official website. Its amount was not disclosed.  "Galal penned a one-and-a-half year contract with the club," Zamalek added. The 50-year-old succeeds Montenegrin coach Jovovic, who was sacked after some poor results dented Zamalek's hopes of competing for the Egyptian Premier League title. Galal will be tasked with turning around the fortunes of Zamalek after they lost four and drew as many games in their first 16 league matches of the season, slipping to fourth in the table, nine points behind leaders Ismaily.  He rose to fame as a manager after an extraordinary campaign with Maqassa last season, helping them finish runners-up to league champions Ahly to earn a historic African Champions League spot. However, he resigned in the summer after falling out with Maqassa's chairman over the club's policy in the transfer market.  Galal took over at Enppi in October and made an instant impact, steering the club to six wins, four draws and only one loss in 11 matches, which came against title holders Ahly. His first match in charge of Zamalek will be a mouth-watering Cairo derby against Ahly on Monday.  "I will be fully responsible for the Ahly match," Galal told Zamalek's official website. "I am confident of the players' ability to produce top-level football and win over the fans." More»
