Caster Semenya won the 800 metres final in a personal best time of 1:55.28 on Saturday, claiming her first Olympic gold medal and using her podium platform to call for unity in sport. Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba finished in 1:56.49 to claim the silver, her country's second medal in any sport at the Olympics. Kenya's Margaret Wambui won bronze in 1:56.89. Semenya has dominated the event this season, with three of the fastest four times, but has had to contend with renewed controversies about her gender. After winning the 2009 world title as a 19-year-old, tests reportedly revealed that she is hyperandrogenous, resulting in her body producing an abnormally high amount of testosterone, which makes her more powerful than her rivals. Briton Mo Farah joined the ranks of the all-time distance greats on Saturday by becoming just the second man to retain both Olympic track long distance titles after adding a brilliant 5,000m gold to his 10,000 at the Rio Games. On a sparkling final night of athletics, Matthew Centrowitz won a shock 1,500m gold for the United States, their first in the event since 1908. The nation also won both 4x400m relays to stretch their winning margin in the track and field medal count. Caster Semenya cruised to victory in the women's 800m, Germany's Thomas Roehler won the javelin and 37-year-old high jumper Ruth Beitia won Spain's first Olympic gold in women's athletics. The Rio athletics program closes with the men's marathon on Sunday. More»

The Paralympics will go ahead in Rio next month but organizers said Friday that deep budget cuts mean a venue will close down, facilities will be dismantled and the workforce will be reduced. Poor ticket sales have compounded existing financial challenges in recession-battered Brazil which have already impacted operations at the Olympics, which close Sunday. Rio has less than three weeks to prepare for Paralympics, the pinnacle of the disability sport calendar where organizers hoped to build on progress made at the well-attended games in London four years ago. Rio organizers report ticket sales of just over 290,000 tickets for the Sept. 7-18 Paralympics. "At this point it is difficult for us to expect the full venues that we saw in Beijing or London, or expect to see in Tokyo in four years' time," International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven said Friday. Egypt's Hedaya Malak won the bronze medal in the women's Taekwondo -57kg category after beating Raheleh Asemani of Belgium by the golden kick early on Friday. After three scoreless two-minute rounds, Malak won by a golden kick in the fourth tie, 1-0, to secure a third medal for Egypt at the Rio Olympics. The 23-year-old had a remarkable run at Rio as she demolished Patino Marin of Colombia 13-0 in the round 16 before stunning reigning World Champion Mayo Hama of Japan by another golden kick, 3-0, in the quarter finals. But the reigning African champion suffered a setback in the semis against Elvo Calvo of Spain – who won the silver medal at the 2015 World Championships – but had a chance to redeem herself against Asemani to claim the bronze as a consolation prize. Ahmad Abughaush, a 20-year-old student from Amman, claimed Jordan's first ever Olympic medal when he beat Russian Alexey Denisenko to win Taekwondo gold in the men's 68kg category on Thursday. Abughaush, who was seeded 10th and considered an outsider for a medal in Rio, used his quick footwork and effective kicks to score a 10-6 upset win over the 2012 London Games bronze medallist. "It's an indescribable feeling to win the first medal in the history of Jordan in all the sports," said Abughaush, who was knocked out in the second round of the world championships last year. "It's also a great feeling to listen to the national anthem of Jordan being played in Rio in front of the whole world." More»

A judge in Brazil has issued an order to prevent U.S. swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen from leaving the country on the grounds they gave conflicting accounts of their robbery outside the Rio Games on Sunday, a Brazilian newspaper said on Wednesday. Lochte, one of swimming' s most decorated Olympians, had already returned to the United States ahead of the court ruling, the newspaper quoted Brazilian police as saying. It was unclear if Feigen had also left the country. Lochte said he, Feigen and two other team mates were traveling back to the Athletes' Village in a taxi in the early hours of the morning after a party when armed men carrying police badges pulled them over. The gunmen ordered them to drop to the ground and demanded their wallets and belongings, Lochte said. More»

Four members of the U.S. swim team, including medalist Ryan Lochte, were robbed at gunpoint in Rio early Sunday, according to a USOC spokesman. The four swimmers — Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Lochte — left a party at the France House near Rio’s lagoon early Sunday morning in a taxi, and were headed back to the Olympic Village in the western part of the city, according to the spokesman. “Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said. “All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.” The IOC had earlier on Sunday denied that Lochte had been a victim. Mo Farah became the first British track and field athlete to win three Olympic gold medals as he retained his 10,000m title with a thrilling victory in Rio. The 33-year-old overcame a mid-race fall and powered clear of the field in the final 100m to win in 27 minutes five seconds. Kenya's Paul Tanui took silver, with Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola in third. Farah returns to the track on Wednesday as he begins the defence of the 5,000m title he also won at London 2012. "I've won an Olympic gold for three of my children," he said. "Now I'd like to win the 5,000m gold for my little boy." Should he win that race, Farah will become the first man since Finland's Lasse Viren in 1976 to retain two Olympic distance titles. More»

The United States won its 1,000th Olympic gold medal on Saturday when the American women's 4x100 meter medley relay team clinched victory at the Rio Games. The honor of reaching the milestone was shared by Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel, who got to the wall first ahead of Australia. "One thousand gold medals is a remarkable achievement made possible by the culture of sport that is the fabric and foundation of Team USA," United States Olympic Committee (USOC) head Scott Blackmun said. Of the 1,000 gold medals, more than half have come from track and field (323) and swimming (246), USOC added. More»

If some swimmers consider second place to be first of the losers, spare a thought for Ethiopian Olympic debutant Robel Kiros Habte. By the time the chubby 24-year-old had emerged for air from his opening dive off the blocks in the 100 meters freestyle heats, he was already almost a body length behind and it did not get any better. The only one of the 59 entrants in the heats not to complete the distance in under a minute, Habte touched the wall with a time 17 seconds slower than Australian pacesetter Kyle Chalmers who clocked 47.90. Habte's only rivals in the three-man opening heat, Thibaut Danho of the Ivory Coast and Johnny Perez Urena of the Dominican Republic had removed their caps and were leaning on the lane markers as he trailed in more than 12 seconds behind.
