Egypt winger Mohamed Salah missed Liverpool's training session on Tuesday due to illness, one day before the club host Sevilla in their opening group-stage game of the European Champions League. "The No.11 was absent as the Reds continued preparations for the opening game of their Champions League group-stage campaign … on Wednesday night," Liverpool said on their official website on Tuesday. "Salah reported to Melwood but was sent home as a precaution," Liverpool further noted. It was not immediately clear if Salah would be a doubt for the Sevilla clash. "He was in and the doc told me Mo Salah can train but what would be best for him is if he doesn’t have to. He has a little bit of a sore throat," said Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp. "(It) shouldn’t be that serious so he can’t spread the virus if there is one. At this moment we expect him back tomorrow morning for normal training." The 25-year-old has made a superb start to his Liverpool career, scoring three goals in his first six competitive matches with the Reds. He said earlier on Tuesday he was looking forward to the Sevilla game. "I'm very, very excited to start the Champions League games at Anfield. I would like to win that game," Salah said on Liverpool's official website. More»

Egypt's Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry has blamed referee Ahmed Hamdy for the team's surprise 1-1 draw with Talae El-Geish in their opening Egyptian Premier League game on Sunday. "The referee's decision affected the outcome of the game," El-Badry said at the post-match press conference. "We can accept the referee's mistakes, but with this huge number of bad decisions it's difficult to accept," he said. El-Geish stunned Ahly when defender Assem Salah converted from the spot nine minutes before the break, sparking furious protests from Ahly players and coach Hossam El-Badry who argued that the penalty should not have been awarded. The Red Devils, champions for the past two seasons, were denied a clear penalty at the other end shortly afterwards. But playmaker Ahmed El-Sheikh, back at the club after a one-year loan spell with Maqassa, curled home a free kick in the 57th minute to equalise. "The team deserved more than a penalty kick as well, because after the game I watched all the referee's mistakes in a video review to make sure of what I said in the press conference," El-badry added. "The opponent's penalty was not valid, because the ball didn't touch the player's hand," the Ahly coach concluded. More»

Defending champions Ahly had to settle for a surprise 1-1 draw with Talae El-Geish in their opening Egyptian Premier League game on Sunday after some controversial refereeing decisions. El-Geish stunned Ahly when defender Assem Salah converted from the spot nine minutes before the break, sparking furious protests from Ahly players and coach Hossam El-Badry who argued that the penalty should not have been awarded. The Red Devils, champions for the past two seasons, were denied a clear penalty at the other end shortly after but playmaker Ahmed El-Sheikh, back to the club after a one-year loan spell with Maqassa, curled home a free kick in the 57th minute to equalise. Ahly pressed forward in the dying stages but squandered a couple of clear-cut chances to settle for a disappointing draw, just like arch foes and perennial rivals Zamalek who were also held to a 1-1 draw with El-Entag El-Harby on Saturday. Moroccan striker Walid Azaro was the only summer signing to be included in the starting line-up but was guilty of wasting some easy chances. More»

A rejuvenated Zamalek side failed to meet the expectations as they were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday by El-Entag El-Harby in their season debut. New Montenegrin coach Nebojša Jovović has fielded 8 new recruits to bolster the team who fired blank last season. However they were stunned as early as the 9th minute when Ahmed Shedid sent a long ball to Omar El-Said, just outside the area, to feint past defenders and shoot at the right bottom side of the goal. It didn't took much for the White to react as new Congolese striker Kabongo Kasongo netted the equaliser in the 27th minute after taking advantage of a blunder by defender Loai Wael to skip past the keeper and score in the empty nets. He could have doubled his tally a few minutes later after being set up to a one-on-one with the keeper but his poor effort was blocked. Zamalek pressed hard and Jovovic kept on bringing on new faces like wingers Ahmed Madbouli and Abdallah Gomaa additionally to striker Bassem Morsi to claim a winner but that was in vain. Earlier in the day, Ismaily battled back from 2-1 down to beat hosts Ittihad of Alexandria 4-2 at the end of 90 minutes. The Dervishes scored three goals in 16 minutes through Moussa Camara 76, Richard Baffour 80 and Ibrahim Hassan 90 to cancel an early lead from Ahmed El-Alfy, 14, and Camacho, 36. More»

Egypt's evergreen goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary remains defiant about his side's 2018 World Cup chances, insisting they will not blow the opportunity. The Pharaohs are closing in qualification to Russia after beating Uganda 1-0 in Alexandria in a Group E clash on Tuesday. The North African giants are hot favourites as a win over Congo next month will put them in pole position to secure the sole ticket. And veteran goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary insists the players won't blow the chance to represent their country at the global showpiece. “The World Cup is a dream that we need to reach out for, the fans and all the Egyptian sports community have to back us up,” ONSport satellite channel. “Every single player in the Egyptian squad has his heart set on the same dream, and by all means this is not an easy time for any of us. “We will not give up on the World Cup dream, this is something the Egyptian fans want more than anything,” he added. The victory put Egypt on top of Group E again with nine points, two ahead of second-placed Uganda. Ghana sit third with five points and Congo languish at the bottom of the group with only one point. Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah’s early goal secured a 1-0 win over Uganda on Tuesday to take the north African side top of their World Cup qualifying group with two rounds remaining. Egypt, who have not reached a World Cup since 1990, lead Group E with nine points from four matches, two ahead of Uganda. Ghana have five points and remain in contention but bottom side Congo, with one point, have been eliminated. Only the top team in each group advances to the finals in Russia. Liverpool forward Salah scrambled home a rebound in the sixth minute after his volley from Abdallah Said’s chip over the Uganda defence had been saved by goalkeeper Denis Onyango. Onyango later made a remarkable triple save from Said and Ramadan Sobhi to deny Egypt a second, while the visitors lacked penetration to trouble 44-year-old Egypt keeper Essam El Hadary. Egypt, coached by Argentine Hector Cuper, will be confident of ending their long wait to reach a World Cup with a home match against Congo on October 8 before they visit Ghana in November. More»

Egyptian striker Amr Gamal has been unveiled as the new signing of South Africa's Bidvest Wits on a loan deal from Ahly. "Gamal has joined us on a one-year loan from Ahly. Welcome to the family," the club stated on their official social-media accounts on Tuesday. The 26-year-old player, who came through Ahly's youth ranks and made his first-team debut in 2013, has never managed to prove himself as the team's number-one striker despite being given numerous chances to impress. He only scored six goals in 23 appearances in all competitions last season, providing three assists. Gamal played against Bidvest when Ahly faced the South Africans in a two-legged tie in the African Champions League preliminary round in March. More»

Twice Copa Libertadores winner Paulo Autuori is close to taking over at Cairo giants Zamalek, Egyptian reports said on Friday. The Brazilian manager is set to arrive in Cairo on Tuesday to put the finishing touches to a deal that would see him earn up to $1.2 million a year, Ahram's sports website reported. Other reports said Autuori was given the green light by Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense, where he works as a football director, to negotiate a move to Cairo's famed club Zamalek. Zamalek have been in a state of disarray since winning the domestic double in 2015, with too many managerial changes blamed by their fans for their failure to maintain that success in the past two seasons, with arch rivals Ahly winning the Egyptian Premier League two straight times. The White Knights are seeking to replace Portuguese coach Augusto Inacio, who was fired last month after less than four months in charge following the team's elimination from the Arab Championship. They have held talks with a number of managers to succeed Inacio, including Belgian Franky Vercauteren and Romanian Victor Piturca. Autuori, 60, won the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the European Champions League, twice with Cruzeiro and Sao Paulo in 1997 and 2005 respectively. He also led Sao Paulo to the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2005, beating English giants Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Autuori's previous experience in the Arab region was with Qatar's Al-Rayyan and the country's Olympic and senior sides from 2009 to 2013. More»

Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup for the 10th time with a 2-0 win over rivals Barcelona at a joyous Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory that underlined their new status as Spain's dominant force. Marco Asensio followed up his brilliant late goal in Sunday's first leg with a stunning effort from 30 metres in the fourth minute that proved a punishing blow for the Catalans. Madrid, last season's Spanish and European champions, dominated throughout, toying with Ernesto Valverde’s side and showing no sign that they were missing suspended forward Cristiano Ronaldo, or Gareth Bale who was on the bench. Karim Benzema struck before halftime to seal their victory and although Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both hit the woodwork, Barcelona left the Spanish capital with Madrid supporters' chants of “Champions” ringing in their ears. Egypt's Ahly scored two goals late in extra time in typical fashion to come from behind and earn a dramatic 2-1 victory over Masry, which gave them their first Egypt Cup title in ten years and completed a domestic double. Substitute Amr Gamal, who will join South Africa's Bidvest Wits on loan, enjoyed a perfect send-off by heading home and creating another goal for veteran right-back Ahmed Fathi in the last four minutes of extra time to break the hearts of a brave and spirited Masry side and give Ahly a record-extending 36th cup title. Attacking midfielder Abdallah Bika gave Masry a surprise lead with a hopeful shot in the first half of extra time but Masry coach and Egypt's all-time leading scorer Hossam Hassan was denied his first title in his managerial career following Ahly's impressive late comeback, which has been a hallmark of the Cairo giants for over 10 years. Ahly last won the oldest club competition in Egypt in 2007 when they beat Cairo rivals Zamalek 4-3 in a thrilling clash. They lost to their bitter foes in the previous two finals. Masry also missed out on only their second title in history, having won the Egypt Cup in 1998. Ahly will now turn their attention to the African Champions League as they eye a memorable treble. They will face Tunisia's Esperance in a mouthwatering two-legged quarter final next month. More»
