Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah’s early goal secured a 1-0 win over Uganda on Tuesday to take the north African side top of their World Cup qualifying group with two rounds remaining. Egypt, who have not reached a World Cup since 1990, lead Group E with nine points from four matches, two ahead of Uganda. Ghana have five points and remain in contention but bottom side Congo, with one point, have been eliminated. Only the top team in each group advances to the finals in Russia. Liverpool forward Salah scrambled home a rebound in the sixth minute after his volley from Abdallah Said’s chip over the Uganda defence had been saved by goalkeeper Denis Onyango. Onyango later made a remarkable triple save from Said and Ramadan Sobhi to deny Egypt a second, while the visitors lacked penetration to trouble 44-year-old Egypt keeper Essam El Hadary. Egypt, coached by Argentine Hector Cuper, will be confident of ending their long wait to reach a World Cup with a home match against Congo on October 8 before they visit Ghana in November. More»

Egyptian striker Amr Gamal has been unveiled as the new signing of South Africa's Bidvest Wits on a loan deal from Ahly. "Gamal has joined us on a one-year loan from Ahly. Welcome to the family," the club stated on their official social-media accounts on Tuesday. The 26-year-old player, who came through Ahly's youth ranks and made his first-team debut in 2013, has never managed to prove himself as the team's number-one striker despite being given numerous chances to impress. He only scored six goals in 23 appearances in all competitions last season, providing three assists. Gamal played against Bidvest when Ahly faced the South Africans in a two-legged tie in the African Champions League preliminary round in March. More»

Twice Copa Libertadores winner Paulo Autuori is close to taking over at Cairo giants Zamalek, Egyptian reports said on Friday. The Brazilian manager is set to arrive in Cairo on Tuesday to put the finishing touches to a deal that would see him earn up to $1.2 million a year, Ahram's sports website reported. Other reports said Autuori was given the green light by Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense, where he works as a football director, to negotiate a move to Cairo's famed club Zamalek. Zamalek have been in a state of disarray since winning the domestic double in 2015, with too many managerial changes blamed by their fans for their failure to maintain that success in the past two seasons, with arch rivals Ahly winning the Egyptian Premier League two straight times. The White Knights are seeking to replace Portuguese coach Augusto Inacio, who was fired last month after less than four months in charge following the team's elimination from the Arab Championship. They have held talks with a number of managers to succeed Inacio, including Belgian Franky Vercauteren and Romanian Victor Piturca. Autuori, 60, won the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the European Champions League, twice with Cruzeiro and Sao Paulo in 1997 and 2005 respectively. He also led Sao Paulo to the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2005, beating English giants Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Autuori's previous experience in the Arab region was with Qatar's Al-Rayyan and the country's Olympic and senior sides from 2009 to 2013. More»

Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup for the 10th time with a 2-0 win over rivals Barcelona at a joyous Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory that underlined their new status as Spain's dominant force. Marco Asensio followed up his brilliant late goal in Sunday's first leg with a stunning effort from 30 metres in the fourth minute that proved a punishing blow for the Catalans. Madrid, last season's Spanish and European champions, dominated throughout, toying with Ernesto Valverde’s side and showing no sign that they were missing suspended forward Cristiano Ronaldo, or Gareth Bale who was on the bench. Karim Benzema struck before halftime to seal their victory and although Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both hit the woodwork, Barcelona left the Spanish capital with Madrid supporters' chants of “Champions” ringing in their ears. Egypt's Ahly scored two goals late in extra time in typical fashion to come from behind and earn a dramatic 2-1 victory over Masry, which gave them their first Egypt Cup title in ten years and completed a domestic double. Substitute Amr Gamal, who will join South Africa's Bidvest Wits on loan, enjoyed a perfect send-off by heading home and creating another goal for veteran right-back Ahmed Fathi in the last four minutes of extra time to break the hearts of a brave and spirited Masry side and give Ahly a record-extending 36th cup title. Attacking midfielder Abdallah Bika gave Masry a surprise lead with a hopeful shot in the first half of extra time but Masry coach and Egypt's all-time leading scorer Hossam Hassan was denied his first title in his managerial career following Ahly's impressive late comeback, which has been a hallmark of the Cairo giants for over 10 years. Ahly last won the oldest club competition in Egypt in 2007 when they beat Cairo rivals Zamalek 4-3 in a thrilling clash. They lost to their bitter foes in the previous two finals. Masry also missed out on only their second title in history, having won the Egypt Cup in 1998. Ahly will now turn their attention to the African Champions League as they eye a memorable treble. They will face Tunisia's Esperance in a mouthwatering two-legged quarter final next month. More»

Egypt's Mohamed Salah on his Premier League debut with Liverpool but the team conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 3-3 with Watford in a thrilling clash on Saturday. The in-form winger won a penalty which Roberto Firmino converted in the 55th minute before scoring himself two minutes later following an assist from the Brazilian to make it 3-2. After a fast breakaway, Firmino lifted the ball over the advancing keeper, with Salah outpacing his marker to volley home into an empty net. Salah was also unlucky not to complete at least a personal double, having wasted some goal-scoring chances after causing Watford's defence all sorts of problems with his pace down the flank. However, Miguel Britos scored for Watford at the death to prevent Liverpool from claiming an opening win. Salah was substituted with four minutes remaining, making way for James Milner. The 25-year-old, who joined from AS Roma in the summer, was one of Liverpool's top performers in the pre-season, netting four goals in six games. More»

Out-of-action Egypt fell one spot to 25th place in the FIFA global rankings this month, although the drop has not affected their position as the top-ranked African team. The Pharaohs' last competitive game was against Tunisia in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June, when they lost 1-0 at Rades Stadium in Tunisia. Egypt will face Uganda in the third round of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers on 31 August in Uganda. Egypt, who were ranked in the global top ten in 2010 during their golden era after three successive Africa Cup of Nations wins (in 2006, 2008 and 2010), still dominate Africa in FIFA's July ranking. Egypt is three places ahead of Democratic Republic of the Congo (28), Senegal (31), Tunisia (34) and Cameroon (35). They have also kept their lead among Arab countries, above Tunisia (34), Algeria (48), Saudi Arabia (59) and Morocco (60). Brazil returned to the lead of the global ranking after the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup winner Germany replaced the Canarinho last month. Namibia were the best mover in the rankings that were released on Thursday, jumping 20 positions to 136th place, while Curacao made the worst move, dropping 18 places to 86th. More»

Zamalek's recent woes continued on Tuesday when they were ousted from the Egypt Cup after a late 2-0 loss to Masry in the semi-final in Alexandria to finish the season empty-handed. Abdallah Gomaa, a Zamalek target, converted a debatable penalty four minutes from time before Abdallah Bika finished off a breakaway deep in stoppage time to lift Masry to their first cup final since they won the trophy with a 4-3 victory over Arab Contractors in 1998. Tempers flared following the final whistle, with Zamalek's angry players haranguing the referee in protest at the decision to award Masry a penalty after Ahmed Tawfik was adjudged to have fouled Ahmed Gomaa. Zamalek missed out on the chance of setting a record of most consecutive Egypt Cup triumphs, having won the past four editions, including two at the expense of bitter Cairo rivals Ahly. The White Knights, who played their first game under the stewardship of caretaker manager Tarek Yehia, have not been able to win any title for the first time since 2012, losing the league to Ahly and failing to go beyond the group stage in the lucrative African Champions League. Alexandria police arrested released 39 fans of Jordan’s Al-Faisaly football team on Monday, who were arrested Sunday for riots that followed the defeat of Faisaly against the Tunisian football team Al-Taragy, three to two, in the final match of the Arab League. The rioters were escorted to Bab Sharq police station in Alexandria where they were accused of destroying public property, assaulting security forces with empty bottles and stones and insulting them. The Al-Faisaly fans’ riots resulted in minor injuries to some security forces. About nine seats were destroyed in the stadium, along with other damages that have yet to be estimated, according to Director of the Alexandria Stadium, Sherif Saad. The Jordanian ambassador attended to the police station, following the arrest of the Jordanian fans, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported. The prosecutor for east Alexandria, Walid al-Behairy, formed a committee to estimate the losses incurred as a result of riots. More»

Africa giants Al Ahly are in hot pursuit of Syria international defender Ahmed Al Salih.  Twenty-seven-year-old Ahmed Al Salih has emerged as a realistic target for Al Ahly after the Egyptian Football Association passed on a rule to treat Syrian players as Egyptians a few days ago.  The player, who occupies the center-back position, has been contacted by Al Ahly officials for a potential move to the Red Devils but no deal has been reached yet, KingFut can confirm.  The Al-Arabi defender moved to Chinese Super League outfits Henan Jianye last January but has endured a tough time at his new club, making just four appearances for the team. Al Ahly are on the lookout for a center-back to replace the recently-departed Ahmed Hegazi, who set sail to English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion. The club have also been reportedly in touch with Smouha over a potential move for Mahmoud Ezzat. More»
