A double from under-fire striker Amr Gamal sent Ahly to the African Champions League quarter-final following a 3-1 comeback victory over Cameroon's Cotonsport in Alexandria on Saturday. Needing a win to book a last-eight berth, Ahly dominated the early exchanges but surprisingly fell behind when Cotonsport's Jean-Joseph Kombous struck on the break after 12 minutes to silence around 20,000 fans who were allowed to attend the match at Borg El-Arab Stadium in Egypt's second biggest city. But Gamal, who is often criticised by the Ahly faithful, soon restored parity with his first Champions League goal in more than a year and veteran playmaker Abdallah El-Said put them ahead after a flowing move in the first half. Gamal headed home early in the second half to make sure of the victory as record eight-time winners Ahly continue their bid towards their first Champions League title since 2013, with Cotonsport waving goodbye to the competition with six defeats from six matches. Ahly will be eyeing nothing less than victory when they host Cameroon’s Cotonsport in the CAF Champions League final Group D game at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium on Saturday. Going into the game in third position on eight points, one behind second-placed Wydad Casablanca and three adrift of leaders Zanaco, Ahly have no other option but to beat already-eliminated Cotonsport to book a last-eight berth. Given the Cameroonians dismal record of nil points, the Reds should find no problem cruising to an easy win against their unfancied opponents. The Ahly management, however, was keen to stress that they should not rest on their laurels against the group outsiders, with goalkeeping coach Tarek Soliman citing low-key league games where they failed to win. “Who said the game against Cotonsport will be easy? There is no such thing in football,” Soliman told Ahly’s satellite TV channel. “We strived to draw against newly-promoted Sharqeya in the league, where we could have lost the game in the final minutes. “That’s not the only game where we failed to win, but there were also other games where we even struggled to draw.” The Reds, who played out a goalless draw at Zanaco in the previous group game, go into the Coton fixture with an almost fully-fit squad. They will be missing skipper Hossam Ghaly after the latter expressed discontent upon his substitution in the 1-1 league draw with Masry a few days ago. Left-back Hussein El-Sayed, long-term absentee Marwan Mohsen and winger Ahmed Hamoudi are nursing respective injuries, with Ahly particularly staffed in these positions. A limited number of 10,000 Ahly fans will be allowed to cheer on their side against Cotonsport, as has always been the case in African games. More»

Zamalek will now have to wait till the final round of the Champions League Group B after being stunned 3-1 by a below-par CAPS United side in disappointing fashion in Harare on Saturday. Going into the game looking for a win to improve their position ahead of the final home game against Ahli Tripoli, Zamalek were not helped by some sloppy finishing in front of goal and poor defending at the other end. Arguably against the run of play, Ronald Pfumbidzai gave the home side the lead just one minute after the half-hour mark, before Stanley Ohawuchi leveled the scoring just one minute before half-time. With now Zamalek back into the game and supposedly eyeing the winner, it was the Zimbabweans who scored twice through striker Abbas Amidu – who struck at death his side's third. Zamalek did not lose hope of qualifying though, with them having to wait till the final round as they should beat Ahli Tripoli, while hoping CAPS do not mount a surprise and beat USM Alger in Algiers. Egypt's Zamalek will be hoping to turn their usual dominance into goals as they meet Zimbabwe's Caps United away from home on Sunday with an African Champions League quarter-final berth at stake. The last year's runners-up paid for their profligacy in recent Champions League matches, having only claimed one win in four Group B games, which came against Caps United. Their hopes to advance to the last eight were dealt a serious blow following a 2-0 defeat at USM Alger last month and there will be no room for further stumbles as the group race heats up in the penultimate round. Zamalek will be looking for a much-needed consistency when they face relegation-threatened side Aswan in the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday as they prepare for a much more important African Champions League clash in midweek. Although the White Knights have notably improved of late under Portuguese coach Inacio Augusto, having won their last three league matches, their fans are still worried over some unconvincing displays. They needed a stoppage-time goal to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to USM Alger in Champions League Group B early this month and will be desperate to avoid any stumble in the away clash against the Algerians next week. Zamalek still top their group with five points from a win and two draws, one ahead of USM and Libya's Ahli Tripoli. With arch rivals Ahly winning the domestic league title with four matches to spare last month and second-place Maqassa ensuring they would finish in the last Champions League berth, Zamalek's only target is to cement their third place to qualify for the Confederation Cup, Africa's secondary club competition. They are three points ahead of Masry and six clear of Smouha, although they are likely to be deducted three points at the end of the season for withdrawing from a league game against Maqassa in April. Inacio said he will have to find a solution to Zamalek's profligacy after they wasted some easy goal-scoring chances in the draw with USM Alger. "We are still suffering from wasting easy scoring chances, but we will work hard in the coming period to overcome this issue," said the former Sporting Lisbon coach. More»

Eh? But true – anyone caught in the United Arab Emirates promoting Qatar Airways could get themselves prison time and a hefty fine. Qatar is currently enduring a period of crisis as the UAE, among others, have cut off diplomatic ties with the nation over claims of supporting terrorist extremism. Qatar have denied all allegations of supporting armed militant groups. It seems the UAE's hostility towards the Qataris has even spread to the realm of football shirts, though. Barcelona have had airline Qatar Airways as their shirt sponsor since 2013, and before that the Qatar Foundation. More»

Egyptian giants Ahly and Zamalek will be facing difficult tests when they take on Cameroon's Coton Sport and Libya's Ahli Tripoli respectively on Tuesday in their second games of the African Champions League group stage. Ahly had a poor start of their group-stage campaign after being held to a goalless draw against Zambian side Zanaco at home last Saturday. Beating Coton Sport now is a must for the Egyptian league leaders to realise their hopes of a smooth passage to the quarterfinals. But the hosts will not be an easy opponent especially as they look to recover from their opening 2-0 loss against Wydad Casablanca. The Moroccans are now top of Group D. More»

A ruthless Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dazzling hat-trick to lead Real Madrid to a crushing 3-0 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday. The Portuguese forward put his team on the verge of their third final in four years and took his tally to 103 goals in the competition as he helped Madrid vanquish their near neighbours at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was another demoralising European defeat for Atletico at the hands of Real, who had beaten Diego Simeone's side in two of the competition's last three finals. More»
