Cameroon came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 and seal a fifth Africa Cup of Nations in a thrilling, edgy final. Substitute Vincent Aboubakar swept in the winner two minutes from time, flicking the ball over defender Ali Gabr and thumping it home. Nicolas Nkoulou had earlier equalised for Cameroon, rising highest to power in a header on the hour mark. The equaliser cancelled out Mohamed Elneny's opener on 22 minutes with a beautifully taken near-post strike. The wild celebrations for Aboubakar's winner announced Cameroon's return to the continental summit, after a wait of 15 years. More»

Barcelona moved to within one point of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga with victory over Athletic Bilbao. Paco Alcacer scored his first La Liga goal for Barcelona on a rare start, with Luis Suarez rested, when he turned home Neymar's cross from 10 yards. Lionel Messi doubled the lead when he beat Athletic keeper Gorka Iraizoz at his near post from a right-wing free-kick. And Aleix Vidal sealed the win after a solo run past several defenders. More»

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said that certain members of his squad need to realise the importance of winning. United are unbeaten in 14 Premier League games but have drawn their past three and been sixth in the table after each round of matches since 6 November. "Playing to win, having the responsibility to win, and coping with the pressure of winning is something that has to belong to your natural habitat," said Mourinho. "For some guys, it doesn't," Mourinho added. Six players in the Old Trafford club's first-team squad have not won a domestic league title or major international tournament - Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford. Egypt will attempt to win the fourth consecutive Africa Cup of Nations in which they have competed when they face Cameroon in Sunday's final. The Pharaohs, among the tournament favourites from the outset in Gabon, were victorious in 2006, 2008 and 2010 before failing to qualify for the next three editions in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Underdogs Cameroon has upset the odds to reach the final, beating much-fancied Ghana in the last four. The game is a repeat of the 2008 final. More»

Egypt reached a record-equalling ninth Africa Cup of Nations final, beating Burkina Faso 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Veteran goalkeeper Essam El Hadary proved Egypt's hero, saving Bertrand Traore's spot-kick to secure victory. In normal time Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Egypt when he curled a superb shot into the top left corner. Burkina Faso leveled when Aristide Bance chested down Charles Kabore's cross and volleyed in. They became the first side to score against Egypt this tournament. More»

A local football match took on significant meaning for supporters this weekend - as war-torn Aleppo witnessed its first live game in five years. Local side Al-Ittihad beat their city rivals Hurriya 2-1 on Saturday. There has been no professional football in Aleppo since it was divided between the army and rebel forces in 2011. The government regained complete control of the city last month in a major offensive. More»

Egypt reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals as Group D winners with a 1-0 win over already qualified Ghana, who finish as runners-up on Wednesday. Mohamed Salah provided the decisive moment, lashing in a free-kick through a gap in Ghana's defensive wall. A mistake by Ghana keeper Brimah Razak presented Marwan Mohsen with a chance to double the lead but he shot over. Daniel Amartey missed Ghana's best chance, heading wide from Christian Atsu's free-kick to the back post. The result means Egypt will face Morocco and Ghana will take on DR Congo in last-eight matches on Sunday. Record seven-time African champions Egypt knew a point would be good enough to take them through to the knockout stage and, after Roma forward Salah put them ahead, they were content to sit back and protect their position. Egypt finished third in their group after losing 33-26 to Sweden in their final group stage match of the 2017 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship. Sweden ended the first half with a 15-9 lead. The Swedish team led by as many as 12 points in the second half before the Pharaohs managed to cut the deficit to seven points by the end of the game. This marked Egypt’s second defeat in the tournament as they had earlier lost against Denmark but claimed three victories over Bahrain, Qatar and Argentina. Egypt, Qatar, Denmark and Sweden had all secured their spots in the knockout stage. The Pharaohs sit third in Group D on six points, two behind Sweden and Denmark, but the latter have a game in hand against fourth-placed Qatar. Egypt will now face Croatia, who finished second in Group C after losing to leaders Germany, in the round of 16 on Jan. 22. The Pharaohs were eliminated in the same stage in the 2015 tournament after losing 23-16 against Germany. More»
