Mothers Of 25 Detained Ultras To Protest Wednesday

The mothers of 25 Ultras Ahlawy members, die-hard fans of Ahly Football Club, will participate in a protest on Wednesday to call for the release of their sons, detained on charges of assaulting security forces.

Activists announced in a Facebook event that the protest will take place at Saad Zaghloul Square nearby Al-Ahly Club in Cairo, at five o’clock in the evening.

The 25 detainees were given a further 15-day detention on Saturday pending investigations.

Clashes erupted as the fan group attempted to storm a Cairo International Airport terminal on 13 October to receive the Ahly Club’s handball team upon its return from Tunisia, after losing in the African Cup final. Eleven police personnel and two airport workers were injured in the melee, some of them by bird-shot.

The 25 detained Ultras face charges of attempted murder and assault on security forces.

Thousands of Ultras members demonstrated earlier in October calling for their release.

Ultras groups have often clashed with police during demonstrations and football matches, with many members arrested, injured and killed over the last two-and-a-half years.
