Egypt’s parliament is to probe and “hold accountable” anyone who intervened to allow foreign activists on trial to leave the country, the house speaker said on Saturday. Saad al-Katatni said parliament would summon officials to explain the decision and “hold accountable those responsible for this crime, which represented a blatant intervention in the affairs of Egypt’s judiciary.” After months of pressure from Washington, about 15 of the foreign defendants including Americans were allowed to fly out of Cairo airport on Thursday after posting bail, sparking outrage in Egypt. “We cannot accept any type of foreign intervention in Egypt’s affairs,” Katatni, an Islamist, told a joint session of parliament and the senate. “This case cannot be ended with a political decision.” The trial, in which the activists were accused of receiving illicit foreign funds to operate unlicensed NGOs, caused a crisis in relations between the United States and its close Middle Eastern ally. Hussein Salem was arrested by police in Madrid last June on suspicion of money laundering and corruption. The court set his bail at 27m Euros ($36m; £22m), while police froze more than 32.5m Euros in cash, properties worth 10m Euros and five luxury cars. Money was allegedly obtained illegally in Egypt and sent to accounts in Spain held by Mr Salem through several firms. Mr Salem is reported to have left Egypt on 3 February 2011, eight days before Mr Mubarak was forced to resign by anti-government protesters. He was charged in Egypt with fraud and financial speculation in May along with Mr Mubarak and the ex-president's two sons, Alaa and Gamal. Their trial ended last month and a verdict is expected in June. Mr Mubarak has been held in custody since April, but it was not until two months later that Mr Salem was detained by Spanish police along with his son, Khaled, and Ali Evsen, a Turkish businessman who is alleged to have set up the companies used to funnel money from Egypt to Spain. After the calls for the consensual president, new calls appeared to criticize the Upper and Lower Houses for electing the constituent assembly that to draft the constitution; as those calls say the junta had to assign the committee without consulting parliament, alleging that this parliament came as a result of politically unaware people and the absence of the parties that compete the political powers. U.S. pro-democracy workers facing trial in Egypt for illegally accepting foreign funds left the country yesterday, with the cases against them unresolved and tensions between the two nations still high. Fifteen workers for non-governmental organizations, including the Americans, departed Cairo in a U.S. government plane after a court lifted their travel ban and their organizations posted bail. The group included Sam LaHood, son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The case drew attention from the highest levels of both governments and threw into question the $1.3 billion in annual U.S. aid to Egypt, which is contingent this year on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton certifying that the government is advancing democracy. The aid has been a cornerstone of the U.S.- brokered 1978 Camp David peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, the most populous Arab nation. More»

Farouk Sultan said that the first round would be held over two days on 23 and 24 May, while a run-off would take place on 16 June and 17 June. Final results are expected on 21 June. The ruling military council, which assumed Mr. Mubarak's powers last year, has said it will hand over power to a civilian administration afterwards. On Saturday, the lower and upper houses of parliament will convene to select a 100-member panel to draft a new constitution. Only once it has been approved in a referendum can the presidential election be held. However, Mr. Sultan was sufficiently confident that the constitution would be written on time to announce that the presidential election commission would accept candidates' applications between 10 March and 8 April, and that the list of hopefuls would be published on 26 April, reported to BBC. Egypt on Wednesday lifted a travel ban on seven Americans who were on trial with 36 other civil-society workers on charges of illegally receiving foreign funds, the first sign that a case that has chilled Egyptian-U.S. relations may be nearing a resolution. The lifting of the travel ban signaled to Egyptian legal experts that U.S. officials had succeeded in persuading the country's ruling military council to back off and mend bilateral relations, which have frayed since the ouster a year ago of then-President Hosni Mubarak, one of Washington's closest Arab allies. Wednesday's move came a day after a judge who had been presiding over the case withdrew amid rumors of political pressure that compromised his independence. More»
