Adel Zayed, Qalyubia governer, said a new initiative started to be taken in the governorate through assigning 10 million LE from service fund for the towns. Each town got 1 million LE to participate in developing and resuming the suspended service projects as well constructing other new ones. He said participating in the new projects changes the citizens’ visions of the governorate’s executive authority during the coming phase. This is through a sharp economic upturn and contain unemployment; by creating new openings for fresh graduates. More»

Dozens of people were wounded after two groups of protestors clashed near the U.S. embassy in downtown Cairo on Friday. The clash occurred as one group of protesters called for the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, while the other group was supporters of Egypt's military rulers. The two groups threw rocks at each other. A health ministry official said that the casualties were mino. The lifting of a travel ban on 43 Egyptian and foreign employees of four U.S. and one German nongovernmental organizations, who were accused of receiving funds illegally and operating without official licenses, has sparked an outcry among Egyptian lawmakers and judges. Egypt declared on Saturday nomination for upcoming presidential elections effective as of today, a step that came in enacting a new national constitution. The supreme presidential election commission is receiving candidacy application papers for the top post, a head of the polls, due to elect the first president since eruption of the January 25 revolution that ousted the fprmer president, Hosni Mubarak.the polling will be held on May 23-24. One of the most controversial cases in post-revolution Egypt was resolved with the acquittal of a police officer charged with the killing of unarmed protestors at the start of the January 25 revolution.  Mohamed Abdel Moneim, previously sentenced to death in absentia for killing 20 protestors and injuring another 15 on January 28, 2011, also known as Friday of Anger, was found innocent in the retrial. Abdel Moneim, who ran away while the North Cairo Criminal Court was holding his trial, turned himself in after the death sentence was announced and was then retried. The acquittal, issued Wednesday also by the North Cairo Criminal Court, included another two officers who work in the same police station as the first defendant.  More»

Cairo Criminal Court postponed NGOs case, 43 of Egyptians and foreigners convicted, until April 10th session; demanding to bring the escaped defendants. The session started by calling the defendants in the dock whereas 15 ones were attending and among them the American Robert who refused to travel. The court witnessed an altercation between the defendants’ defense and claimants when a lawyer describe the case as a codified espionage one; explaining that travel ban lift decision degrades Egyptians’ dignity consequently the session ended. The claimants claimed EGP 100 thousands compensation as a temporary one and called for involving the former director of General Intelligence Doctorate Omar Suleiman in the case. More»

The Spouse of the Saudi Ambassador in Cairo, Ms. Umayya Yousef Ka'aki paid a visit to the Children's Cancer Hospital, known as 57357, and was treated to a walking tour of the hospital’s sections and facilities. The wife of Ambassador Ahmed Kattan was escorted in her tour by the hospital’s director, Dr. Sherif Abouelnaga, who highlighted the enormous capabilityies of the 57357 hospital, which positioned it among the world's largest cancer hospitals. Due to banning the journalist to enter Cairo Criminal court hall, to attend NGOs case, as a pretext for the court president’s decision, violent clashes came about between a number of journalists and police officers. The Advisory council’s president Mansour Hassan, who previously announced his run for president, said that there are political authorities support him. In a statement to “Asharq Alawsat”, Hassan said “I decided to run for president and there are political authorities support me, in and out of the parliament, but I’m not to say in the present time”. Hassan, who was minister during the late president Anwar Al Sadat’s rule, refused to say if he intended to collect 30 thousands signatures or he will rely on the 30 MPs support.  According to the current constitutional declaration, each of the former two ways is acceptable to submit the nomination’s documents. The mysterious departure of foreign NGOs workers facing trial in Egypt has left many unanswered questions with no one claiming responsibility for the decision to lift the travel ban. The NGO case continues to strike a nerve in Egypt’s political and judicial arena as well as the general public. Egypt imposed travel bans for 43 NGO workers, including 16 Americans, in February on charges of illegally receiving foreign funds and working in the country without licenses. The travel ban was mysteriously lifted after the trial judges rescued themselves last week citing “reasons of discomfort.” A group of 13 foreign NGO workers, including six Americans, left Egypt on a U.S. plane on Feb. 6. A new panel of judges has been appointed to investigate the charges and the next hearing is scheduled on Thursday. More»
