Egypt welcomes the US decision to place two Egyptian terrorist groups, Hasm and Lewaa Al-Thawra, on its terror list, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday. Egypt considers the decision a positive development in the perception of Egypt's international partners, especially the United States, regarding the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated terrorist groups, the ministry's statement said. Foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zaid said that the US decision is a real-world demonstration of solidarity with Egypt against terrorism, and an important step forward by the international community in adopting a comprehensive strategy to fighting terrorism and eradicating its roots. The Egyptian government says that Hasm and Lewaa Al-Thawra are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood group, which is banned and designated a terrorist organisation in Egypt. Hasm and Lewaa Al-Thawra have claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in Egypt that have killed dozens of police and army personnel. The US has also put the head of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, Ismail Haniya, on its terror blacklist and has hit him with sanctions. The US government also placed sanctions on Harakat Al-Sabireen, a small Iran-affiliated militant group that splintered from the Islamic Jihad and operates in Gaza, according to the US Secretary of State. "These designations target key terrorist groups and leaders– including two sponsored and directed by Iran– who are threatening the stability of the Middle East, undermining the peace process, and attacking our allies Egypt and Israel," US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement on Wednesday. Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is heading to Oman in his first official visit to the country on Sunday, where he is set to meet Sultan Qaboos Bin Said to discuss bilateral and regional issues, the presidency's spokesperson Bassam Rady said in a statement on Friday.Sisi is also set to meet with a number of top Omani officials to tackle ways of consolidating bilateral cooperation in several fields. The discussions will also address the latest Arab, regional, and international developments of mutual interest. This visit comes out of Sisi's keenness to boost historical and brotherly relations between the Omani and Egyptian peoples, and to intensify joint consultation and coordination in several bilateral and regional issues to serve the interests of the two countries, Rady said. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Qaboos in Muscat last November as part of a regional diplomatic tour that aimed at intensifying consultations and coordination between "Egypt and its brothers in the region," especially in light of political developments in Lebanon at the time. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that if the situation necessitates it, he would be willing to call on the Egyptian people to take to the streets in demonstrations that would serve as a mandate for him to face evil forces that threaten the country. The president made the comments during a ceremony in Port Said to inaugurate the first phase of operations at the giant gas field Zohr off Egypt's Mediterranean coast. Sisi gave a warning against those who would attempt to "tamper with the security of Egypt." “No one can mess with the country’s security. What has been accomplished in terms of security and stability will not be impinged upon by anyone again,” Sisi said, stressing that he will not allow a "repetition of what happened eight years ago." The president warned citizens not to allow anyone to "lead you astray." “The security of Egypt is worth my life and that of the army,” he said. The Egyptian President also spoke about Italian student Giulio Regeni, who was found murdered in Cairo in February 2016 with his body bearing signs of torture. Sisi asked Claudio Descalzi – the CEO of Italian gas company Eni, which is tasked with extracting gas from Zohr – "do you now know why they wanted to drive a wedge between us and Italy? [It was] so that we would not achieve this," referring to operations at Zohr. Sisi said that the Regeni murder was an attempt to "cut the friendship between Italy and Egypt.” “I will not forget Italy standing by us despite the Regeni incident. I will not forget it and neither will Egypt,” El-Sisi said. The president reiterated condolences to Regeni’s family, and pledged that he will bring the culprits behind the murder to justice. Last month, Sisi stressed in a meeting in Cairo with the Italian Minister of Interior Marco Minniti Egypt's "sincere determination" to reach final conclusions in the ongoing probe into Regeni's murder. Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is set to inaugurate on Wednesday the first stage of super-giant Zohr gas field, bringing the country closer to achieving its goal of self-sufficiency in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The inauguration comes nearly a month after experimental production began at the field at an initial 350 million cubic feet per day (mcfd), a test which had been planned shortly after the field’s discovery by Italian energy company Eni in 2015. Located 180km (110 miles) off the coast of Port Said and 1,500m deep, the gigantic gas field is the largest in the Mediterranean Sea, More»

Egypt’s fiscal year 2017/18 budget deficit is expected to record 9.4 percent of GDP, up from a projected 9.1 percent in the budget for the current fiscal year, Deputy Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait told Reuters on Tuesday. Egypt's budget deficit for fiscal year 2016/17, which ended last June, fell to 10.9 percent of GDP, down from 12.5 percent of GDP the previous year. The expected increase comes on the back of high interest rates and an increase in global oil prices. Brent crude recorded $69.18 per barrel on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) raised interest rates by 700 basis points since the November 2016 floating of the EGP, and has kept interest rates unchanged since July 2017. More»

For the first time in six years, Egypt’s budget transparency score jumped from 16 to 41 points out of 100, which is nearly the global average score of 43 points. According to the bi-annual Open Budget Survey produced by IBP, Egypt is in the 65th rank among 115 countries, compared to its 89th rank among 102 countries in 2015. This rank means that Egypt exceed the MENA regional average of 18 by 23 notches."This improvement resulted from the efforts exerted during the past three years to develop the transparency and disclosure frameworks," Minister of Finance Amr El Garhy said, commenting on the final results. Garhy added that the achieved score (41 out of 100 points) is almost near the global average score of 43 points. “This is considered the first explicit improvement since 2012,” he explained. More»

BBC International School in Egypt has released a statement announcing that this school year will be their final one 32 years since the school was established, citing financial losses over the past five years as the key reason for shutting down activities. “We were against raising the tuition fees, we preferred carrying the burden of any additional costs on us, rather than on the parents,” the statement said, while pointing out that other schools’ decision to raise their tuition fees by 60-70 percent was the “right thing to do.” Many parents, however, are demanding swift interference by Egypt’s Ministry of Education. “How can we find a proper replacement, at the same financial and educational level, which would admit 600 students at once on such short notice? Are we supposed to react to the closure of a school as nonchalantly as we would when a store shuts down without considering the students’ future which is tied to the establishment?” some of the parents said to Al-Masry Al Youm. Parents further noted that they were not the ones in charge of putting up the curriculum, deciding on the expenses and the school’s level of services. “The school decided on everything and we, as parents, decided to agree on such criteria and put our children to that school. How can a school take a major decision that affects the futures of more than 600 students all of a sudden, after we trusted them with our kids,” one parent said. “This move can harm our kids both psychologically, and on an educational level. Will our ministry of education give the green light for a private school to take an unprecedented step like this one?” Last week, the school’s administration sent the parents a follow-up statement, noting that BBC International School will become unaccredited after the graduation of this year’s seniors, reaffirming the school’s indefinite closure. “We all agreed on the 30 percent increase of the school’s tuition between 2012-2014. We now pay a tuition ranging between LE45,000-50,000, excluding bus fees and the school uniforms. We were fine by that and no one opposed the decision when it was implemented,” another parent said. They added that the school’s administration never asked for another tuition raise, denying the school’s claims that there were negotiations. In September, Egypt’s Ministry of Education took action to control private and international schools’ rising fees for the academic year 2017/18. The measures included controlling the increased fees of international schools to 14 percent for new and old students for the academic year 2017/2018, and then, seven percent annually. According to the Ministry’s new measures, the educational directorates are committed to monitoring private and international schools to ensure the fees of the school uniforms go unchanged. Schools are prohibited to increase bus fees above 10 percent. Private and International schools which violate the Ministry’s measures will be warned and notified to remove the violations. More»

Egypt’s prosecution ordered on Sunday the release of ex-head of Egypt’s Administrative Control authority, Hisham Geneina, and a four-day detention, pending investigations, of the three suspects allegedly assaulting him a day earlier. The detained are charged with assaulting Geneina, bullying, the possession of weapons without authorization, and inciting chaos, Ahmed Hanafi, first general lawyer of the New Cairo Prosecution, said. Earlier on Saturday, Geneina was reportedly attacked and beaten by unidentified men in New Cairo, causing several injuries to his face and legs, Ali Taha, Geneina’s lawyer said. Geneina was leaving his house on his way to the administrative court to attend an appeals court session over a case he had filed to challenge a presidential decree that removed him from his post in 2016. According to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram,  the Interior Ministry said that the fight broke out following a car accident as Geneina hit a coffee shop owner’s car in the area of New Cairo. The interior ministry said that Geneina was trying to flee the scene of the accident along with his wife, daughter and a guard, when two men tried to stop them until the police arrived. “Geneina was injured, and has several abrasions on his hands and feet,” the statement said, adding that the three others were injured with leg fractures, scalp wounds, and were treated at New Cairo Hospital. According to the statement, the police seized an iron piece that was used as a weapon by the guard accompanying Geneina, while witnesses accused his wife and daughter with assault. The police referred the incident to the prosecution for investigation, “after all parties involved denied the above claims,”  the interior ministry statement added. However, Geneina stated that the incident was planned, and the defendants were coming to kill him. “They forced me to stop the car on my way to the court, they hit me, assaulted me, and insulted me. They were trying to kill me,” Geneina said during his investigations, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm Geneina was appointed by ex-army chief of staff Sami Anan as his vice president running mate shortly before Anan was arrested and taken out of the presidential race over charges of “forgery” of his military documents, as well as “violating” army rules, and “inciting” against the armed forces. In July 2016, Geneina was sacked as a top auditor after he reported that corruption had cost the country US$68 billion in four years. He was also sentenced to jail for spreading false news at the time. However, later in December, the jail sentence was suspended. More»

Zagazig Superior Misdemeanor Court reduced the prison sentence of Osama Morsi, the son of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, to one month, after another he had initially been sentenced for three years’ imprisonment. The Zagazig Misdemeanour Court, which has less jurisdiction than the Zagazig Superior Misdemeanor Court, was headed by Hazem Basher in October 2017 when it sentences Osama to a three-year prison sentence after he was charged with possessing a penknife without a license. Police had initially arrested Osama in December 2016 as per prosecution order, in a case related to the dispersal of a pro-Morsi sit-in Cairo in August 2013, where Morsi’s son was said to have two penknives in his.
