Cairo Criminal Court ruled on Wednesday to remove Egypt’s former Prime Minister and presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq from arrival watchlist. Anadolu Agency quoted a judiciary source saying that the court accepted the former presidential candidate’s petition to remove his name from the list of suspects wanted upon arrival and the travel ban list at Egyptian airports. Shafiq’s attorney Dina Adly Hussein said that the ruling serves as a permit for Shafiq to return to Egypt, confirming that it’s a final verdict. Hussien pointed out that the Shafiq lawyers’ group filed a grievance against listing his name in the watchlist last June. The first appeal session was held in 7 August. Shafiq, former air force chief who served as the last prime minister of Hosni Mubarak, was added to the border watch-list in late August. He faced various accusations over illegitimate land selling and corruption; he was acquitted in 2013 by Cairo Criminal Court. More»

The Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) in the Egyptian cabinet said Wednesday that the banks operating in Egypt provided $2.2bn to meet the needs of their customers and secure documentary credits as of Monday, since the liberalisation of the exchange rate of the Egyptian pound. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) had liberated the Egyptian pound exchange rate early November, scoring EGP 13 against the US dollar during the first day of liberation instead of EGP 8.88, and increased the interest rates by 3% to adjust to the foreign exchange market. In response to rumours that some banks refused to sell foreign exchange to their customers due to its scarcity, the CBE said in a press statement that the banks are working to secure all the foreign exchange needs of customers. The banking sector injected more than $2.2bn to cover customers’ needs and provided documentary credits to foreign trade transactions, starting from the Egyptian pound’s flotation until 14 November. Tarek Amer, governor of the CBE, said in a press statement on Wednesday that the total proceeds of US dollars purchased by banks since the flotation as of Monday registered $2.6bn. Economic experts believe that currency liberation will encourage foreign investments, increase exports, and enable companies to obtain dollars from banks at market prices— which will return them for full production again, after the production processes declined in the past period due to the shortage of foreign currency reserves. The dollar price in banks jumped to EGP 18 in some banks after the flotation; however, it has now declined to EGP 16. Egypt has received the first tranche from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) loan worth $2.75bn, which was approved on 11 November. More»

Egypt's court of cassation has overturned on Tuesday the death sentence against the country's deposed president Mohamed Morsi. Switzerland will return to Egypt an ancient artefact stolen from a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, Geneva's public prosecutor said on Monday. The stone slab bearing a relief design was stolen 30 years ago from the Iseion temple at the Behbeit El Hagar archeological site in Lower Egypt. "During an inventory control in the Geneva free economic zone at the end of 2014, the federal customs identified... a granite engraving of unknown origin and alerted Geneva police, who opened a criminal case," the public prosecutor said. Egyptologist Philippe Collombert from the University of Geneva examined the artefact and it was traced to the Isis temple near the towns of Sebennytos and Mansoura in the Nile delta, the statement said. Investigators compared photographs taken by French archeologist Christine Favard Meeks at the site in the 1970s to more recent ones which "established without any doubt that the granite engraving was stolen from" Behbeit El Hagar. The tablet will shortly be handed over to Egyptian authorities. The Iseion was one of the major centres of the Isis cult in antiquity, comparable to those in the temple complexes at Philae and Abydos in Upper Egypt. Isis was venerated as the goddess of health, marriage and wisdom. She was the consort of Osiris, the Egyptian god of death and the underworld. Egypt has been campaigning to have many precious artefacts housed in European museums that it considers stolen to be returned, such as the Nefertiti Bust in Berlin. More»

Egypt's parliament has approved on Monday a presidential decree to extend the state of emergency in designated parts of North Sinai for three further months. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi decided in October to extend the state of emergency starting from Oct. 31, but his decision awaited for the approval of the majority of the parliament's members. The Egyptian constitution states that the president may declare a state of emergency after consultation with the cabinet. However, “such declaration must be presented to the House of Representatives within the following seven days to decide thereon as it deems fit,” according to Article 154 of the constitution. Sisi's decision to extend the state of emergency came few days after 12 security personnel were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in North Sinai. The state of emergency has been extended for three months at a time since it was initially declared by Sisi in October 2014 in reaction to a militant attack that killed 33 security personnel. Militant insurgency has surged in North Sinai since the military ouster of then-president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests against his rule. Daesh-affiliated militants are the most active in the area, targeting mainly security personnel. More»
