A translation error in US President Donald Trump's speech on military cooperation between Egypt and the U.S. during President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's recent visit to Washington on Monday caused confusion among the Egyptian press. At the beginning of his speech, Trump spoke of the United State's support for Egypt, confirming that Egypt and the United States will fight terrorism together and will be friends for a long time. He demonstrated the importance of this support by addressing the great military potential of the United States, saying that he will raise the US military's capabilities to the highest levels through major deals for aircraft, aircraft carriers and warships. Egypt has strongly condemned what it described as the indiscriminate bombardment of Khan Sheikhoun town in Syria's northwestern Idlib province, which resulted in the death and injury of hundreds on Tuesday. In a statement the Egyptian foreign ministry said that the painful and unacceptable images of the massacre reaffirm the necessity of reaching a political solution to end the crisis in Syria, in light of the international community decisions and UN Security Council Resolution 2254, as well as the Geneva Conventions. At least 72 civilians, among them 20 children, were killed in Tuesday's attack in rebel-held Khan Sheikhun, and dozens more were left gasping for air, convulsing, and foaming at the mouth, doctors said. U.S. President Donald Trump has signalled a new era in the US-Egypt relations, pledging years of tepid relations will now give way to a "great bond" between the two nations. The US president reunited with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for talks ranging from collaboration against the Islamic State terror group to bolstering Egypt's flailing economy. In Trump, al-Sisi sees new opportunity after years of lukewarm relations with Barack Obama. "This is my first state visit to the United States since my inauguration and this is the first visit in eight years for an Egyptian president to the United States," al-Sisi said. Obama never invited the Egyptian leader to the White House and Egypt's government was repeatedly admonished over its human rights record. Obama even briefly suspended some US military aid. It is the second meeting for Trump and al-Sisi. Reflecting on their first encounter in New York shortly before the general election, Trump said al-Sisi was someone "very close to me". al-Sisi praised Trump on Monday for his "unique personality" and said that after their first meeting "I bet on you", the latter being comments he made in Arabic that were not translated. For Egypt, the objective is clear: Help us help you. In recent months, US and Egyptian officials have sought to stress commonalities. Like Trump, al-Sisi believes he can eradicate radical Islamic extremism. "Together, we will fight terrorism and other things and we're going to be friends for a very, very long time," Trump said, citing a "great bond with the people of Egypt". al-Sisi vowed to work with the US "to counter this evil ideology that is claiming innocent lives, that is bringing devastation to communities and nations and that is terrorizing the innocent people". Since the military overthrew Egypt's first post-revolution president, the popularly-elected Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood member, al-Sisi has cracked down on political Islamists. He has also has taken a heavy hand on Egyptians who deemed his presidency illegitimate, often relegating human rights concerns to national security. But al-Sisi’s government believes its success in fighting radicalism depends critically on US aid. Egypt is among the top recipients of US military and economic assistance, but the aid is being evaluated as part of the Trump administration's push for dramatic budget cuts to diplomacy and development. Trump has vowed to work closely with Arab allies in the fight against IS. As a neighbour to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Libya and Sudan, maintaining stability in Egypt is a high priority, but it has sometimes been a relationship from which the US receives little in return and Trump has said he will not tolerate imbalances in other partnerships, as with China and many European allies. Egypt received some unsettling news after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s upbeat visit with U.S. President Donald Trump: Gains in private sector economic activity reversed course in March, suggesting the economy hasn’t yet turned the corner despite painful austerity measures and currency reform. Analysts had said a cordial White House visit would help to validate the Egyptian leader’s war on Islamists and measures he promoted to boost an economy that’s struggled since longtime leader Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. Al-Sisi, eager to keep about $1.5 billion in annual U.S. aid intact, received a warm welcome on Monday from Trump, who said he’s “done a fantastic job in a very difficult situation.” The tone was a sharp departure from the one taken by the Obama administration, which had been critical of Al-Sisi’s deadly crackdown on Islamists and other opponents, and had never hosted him in Washington. But the economic news drove home the challenges the Egyptian president still faces. The Emirates NBD Purchasing Managers’ Index showed that economic activity for the country’s non-oil private sector reversed course in March, ending three months of gains by dropping to 45.9 in March from 46.7 in February. The New Orders sub-index slipped to 43.8 from 44. Readings below 50 indicate the economy is contracting. Takes Time “Although the economy’s re-balancing process is proceeding as one would expect -- evident through a narrowing in the trade deficit and higher FX reserves -- it will take some time before this translates into stronger growth momentum,” Tim Fox, head of research and chief economist at Emirates NBD, said in a statement. Gains in the December through February period had suggested that the government had begun to see positive results from its Nov. 3 decision to lift foreign-exchange controls and raise fuel prices, moves that sealed a $12 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan. Foreign investments are up and net foreign reserves rose to a six-year high of $28.5 billion at the end of March. Yet the latest PMI reading showed the private sector was still struggling with other consequences of the reforms: a pound that lost half of its value relative to the dollar and more expensive raw materials. Consumer prices surged after the pound was floated, with annual core inflation topping 33 percent in February, although month-on-month inflation slowed. Businesses have passed on those costs to consumers in the North African nation, who aren’t comforted by officials’ assurances that the hardships were expected and will pass. About half of Egypt’s 92 million people live near or below the poverty line. More»

The Shura Council of the Muslim Brotherhood group will hold a meeting this weekend to vote on a document to reconcile with the current regime in exchange for the Brotherhood's return to political and social life, as was the case under former president Hosni Mubarak. The group said the document will come into effect following the vote. This document was prepared by a committee composed by Acting Supreme Guide, Mahmoud Ezzat, and was published on the group official website. The document acknowledges that many international powers reject the Brotherhood's return to any sort of authority in Egypt. More»
