Former US President George HW Bush and his wife Barbara Bush have been admitted to a hospital in Houston, Texas, according to a spokesman. The 41st president was admitted on Saturday due to "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia". The 92-year-old has now been moved to the intensive care unit after doctors performed a "procedure to protect and clear his airway". Mrs Bush, 91, was admitted on Wednesday suffering from fatigue and a cough. During his procedure, Mr Bush was sedated, his spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement. Mr Bush, the oldest living US president, is expected to be well enough to go home in a few days. More»

President Barack Obama has defended his decision to free Wikileaks source Chelsea Manning, 29 years before her scheduled release. He told his final news conference that "justice has been served". Manning was sentenced to 35 years for leaking diplomatic cables to the group, one of the largest breaches of classified material in U.S. history. The commutation of her sentence has been attacked by Republicans as sending the wrong message. House Speaker Paul Ryan said the move set a "dangerous precedent". The 29-year-old transgender US Army private, born Bradley Manning, leaked documents to Wikileaks in 2010. She will be freed on 17 May but had been scheduled to be released in 2045. The president said Manning has served a tough prison sentence. More»

Britain will not seek a Brexit deal that leaves it "half in, half out" of the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May will say Tuesday, according to her office, in a speech setting out her 12 priorities for upcoming divorce talks with the bloc. Those priorities will include leaving the European Union's single market and regaining full control of Britain's borders, several newspapers reported, reinforcing investor fears of a 'Hard Brexit' which has pushed the pound to some of the lowest levels against the U.S. dollar seen in more than three decades. More than six months after Britons voted to leave the EU, May has come under fire from investors, businesses and lawmakers for revealing little about the future relationship she will seek when she begins formal divorce talks by the end of March. She is due to set out more detail on her plans on Tuesday in a speech to an audience including foreign diplomats and Britain's own Brexit negotiating team. "We seek a new and equal partnership, between an independent, self-governing, global Britain and our friends and allies in the EU," May will say, according to advance extracts released by her office. "Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European Union, or anything that leaves us half-in, half-out. We do not seek to adopt a model already enjoyed by other countries. We do not seek to hold on to bits of membership as we leave." The extracts did not set out explicit details of the future trading relationship she wants to have with the EU or what the 12 priorities would be, but media reported they would also include removing Britain from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. Media reported May would be less explicit on her plans for the customs union, but that her emphasis on building new trade relationships would make clear Britain could be no longer a member in the way it is now. Sterling fell sharply on Monday ahead of the speech on the prospect of a move away from preferential EU single market access and a hardening stance towards an economic bloc that accounts for roughly half of Britain's exports and imports. The EU would be likely to insist on freedom of movement for EU citizens in return for full access to the single market, while many of those who voted for Brexit did so precisely in order to be able to restrict immigration. May will say she wants Britain to be a "magnet for international talent", and a "great, global trading nation" that reaches beyond Europe to build relationships with other countries around the world. She will also say that it is in Britain's national interest for the EU to succeed. "We will continue to be reliable partners, willing allies and close friends. We want to buy your goods, sell you ours, trade with you as freely as possible, and work with one another to make sure we are all safer, more secure and more prosperous through continued friendship," she will say. Demand for oil and gas will continue to grow for the next few decades and any fall in capital investment for the industry will cause "spikes" in prices. It is to affect the global economy, according to the president and CEO of Saudi Arabian Oil Company - Aramco. Speaking Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Amin Nasser told a Wall Street Journal panel that $25 trillion would need to be invested over the 25 years on new oil capacity to meet rising demand. He added that renewable energy will gain a market share over the long term but it would not be dominant. "It will take decades for them (renewables) to replace petroleum resources. So what we are doing in Saudi Aramco we are building our capacity in the oil," he said. He said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had oil capacity of 12.,5 million barrels per day and it continues to build on that capacity, as well as expanding its gas portfolio. More»

U.S. astronaut Gene Cernan - the last man to walk on the Moon - has died aged 82. America's space agency Nasa said it was "saddened by the loss" of the retired spaceman. Captain Cernan was one of only three people to go to the Moon twice and the last man to leave a footprint on the lunar surface in 1972. The final words he spoke there were: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind." He was the commander of the Apollo 17 mission at the time. Twelve people have walked on the Moon, and only six of them are still alive today. More»
