Power plants consume 4bn cubic feet of gas per day- Egypt’s minister

The total amount of power plants consumption of natural gas hiked due to the high temperatures, Egyptian Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla told Amwal Al Ghad Sunday.

He announced that the daily consumption of all power plants in Egypt reached around four billion cubic feet of natural gas in August 2016.

The minister added that natural gas consumption rates of power stations represent whole production oil sector. Accordingly, the ministry adopts a strategy to boost total gas production through issuing a number of bids for drilling and exploration in concession areas that have never been explored within the last years.

Minister El-Molla clarified that oil and power sectors are expected to face more challenges to provide gas and mazut (heating oil) necessary for operating plants due to the growing consumption rates.

The minister  asserted that petroleum ministry is fully committed to meet all needs of electricity sector despite its growing dues.

Egyptian oil sector meets industrial sector as well as housing and commercial  units needs of gas through importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargos, El-Molla added.
