Crude-oil futures gained Tuesday, following better-than-expected home price data and as investors continued to monitor European risks ahead of a leaders’ summit later this week. Crude oil for August delivery CLQ2 -0.35% advanced 19 cents, or 0.2%, to $79.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices have wavered between small gains and losses for most of the Asian and European trading hours. Oil ended lower on Monday, pressured by a stronger dollar and a downbeat session for U.S. stocks. The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city composite index gained 1.3% in April, lessening its on-year decline to 1.9% from 2.6%, according to a Tuesday release. Consumer confidence, however, declined for a fourth month, the Conference Board reported. The index fell to 62 in June, its lowest since January. More»

The euro pared its loss versus the dollar Tuesday after a report showed U.S. consumer confidence fell more than expected this month, after the shared currency was pressured after a weak sale of short-term Spanish government debt. The Japanese yen also turned up after Japan’s lower house of parliament passed a consumption tax bill. The euro EURUSD -0.31% declined to $1.2481, off its lows of $1.2454 and from $1.2501 in North American trading late Monday. The shared currency gave up a modest gain after Spain sold 3.08 billion euros ($3.85 billion) of 3- and 6-month treasury bills. The dollar index DXY +0.11% , which measures the U.S. unit against a basket of six major currencies, pared gains to 82.489 from 82.461 Monday. The Conference Board’s consumer-confidence index fell to 62 in June — the lowest level since January — from a revised 64.4 in May. More»

The Israeli shekel stayed down against the U.S. dollar on Monday after the Bank of Israel lowered interest rates by a quarter-percentage point to 2.25%, citing declining inflation pressures. The rate cut was as expected by analysts at Credit Suisse. The bank's research department expected the country's economy to grow around the 3% level, while global growth has slowed more. "The level of economic risk in the world due to developments in Europe remained high, and with it the concern of negative effects on the domestic economy," the bank said in a statement. The dollar USDILS +0.52% rose to buy 3.9161 shekels. More»

Egypt's Alexandria Cotton Exporters' Association (Alcotexa) committed to sell 1,462 tonnes of cotton in the two-week period that ended on June 23, an Alcotexa official said on Monday. The sales comprised 114 tonnes of Giza 88 cotton grade and 1,348 tonnes of Giza 86, the official said. The deals bring Alcotexa's export commitments for the 2011/12 season, which began in September 2011, to 77,234 tonnes, worth $241.7 million. By this time last year, Alcotexa had sold 110,539 tonnes of cotton worth $455.1 million. More»

Egypt's currency, the pound , weakened to its lowest against the U.S. dollar in more than seven years on Sunday as the country waited to see if a former military officer or a member of the Muslim Brotherhood would be its next president. The pound was bid at as low as 6.055 to the dollar, its weakest since Dec. 30, 2004. "It is definitely because of the uncertainty surrounding the election results," a currency dealer at a Cairo-based bank said. "There is heavy selling to local customers. I think there is a lot of panic among local customers." The Higher Presidential Election Commission (HPEC) is due to announce the result of last weekend's polarising run-off vote at a news conference at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT). More»

Egypt's military rulers have secured record supplies of fuel worth at least $1.2 billion for the summer months, paying trading houses such as Vitol and Glencore above market prices to satisfy demand as political instability deepens. Fuel shortages provoked public anger earlier this year. But trying to avoid a repeat is proving costly as uncertainty about Egypt's move to democracy has frightened off many traditional suppliers, leaving trading houses as the dominant players. "(The premium) is considerable - if the threat is real enough ... maybe 25 percent," said one trader with a trading house that supplies fuel to Egypt, adding that the final contract details were still being settled. Oil futures fell sharply in electronic trading on Thursday, extending heavy losses made the previous day, after weak Chinese data raised further concerns about demand trends. Benchmark U.S. crude oil for July delivery  lost 1.3% or $1.07 to trade at $80.38 a barrel in electronic trading during Asian hours. Data out Thursday showed China’s manufacturing sector contracting further, as HSBC said the inital or “flash” version of its manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index hit a seven-month low in the current month. On Wednesday, oil dropped $2.23, or 2.7%, to end at $81.90 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest close for a front-month contract since Oct. 5., as investors fretted about supply data.
