11 August marks first day of Eid Al-Adha: Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta
Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam said Friday 11 August will be the first day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhu Al-Hijjah, meaning that Eid Al-Adha will fall on Sunday.
Dar Al-Ifta, the body responsible for issuing religious edicts, said in a statement on Thursday that the Holy Day of Arafa, which marks the second day of the hajj and is the day before the start of Eid Al-Adha, will be on Saturday.
Eid Al-Adha is one of the two most important religious holidays in the Islamic calendar, along with Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
It marks the beginning annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia and commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his own son as an act of obedience to God. It is celebrated over four days.
