2 Killed In Cairo As Pro-Morsi Protesters Denounce Brotherhood Death Sentences

Two protesters have been killed in clashes in El-Marg area in east Cairo between pro-Morsi demonstrators and security forces aided by local opponents, reported medical sources.

Protests have taken place in a number of cities across the country to condemn death sentences imposed on senior leaders of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

A source at the ministry of interior told Ahram Arabic news website that the a total of eight were injured in clashes in Cairo. It added that police have arrested 53 demonstrators nationwide.

Five protests in east and west Alexandria began after Friday prayers, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Death sentences were handed to Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, top leaders Safwat Hegazi and Mohamed El-Beltagi, and 11 others on Thursday.

The  sentences were referred to the grand mufti for review as first step in the legal process required to enact the death penalties.

The mufti’s decision is not binding, however. Following his decision, the court will issue its final verdict. The defendants can then appeal.

The protesters were also demanding the release of all Islamist detainees.

In Damietta in the northeast Delta, security forces dispersed another pro-Morsi demonstration. Supporters of the ousted president were holding posters with the Rabaa sign and chanting slogans against President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Security forces also dispersed protests in Giza with tear gas.

In the northwest Delta’s governorate of Beheira, Morsi supporters protested amid a heightened security presence.

The pro-Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL) has called on Morsi supporters to continue protesting in preparation for what it called the “uprising of 3 July 2014.”

It said its aim was to reclaim the 25 January revolution that had been “stolen by the military.”
