4 Students Detained For Instigating Cairo University Clashes, Charged With Manslaughter

The South Giza prosecution ordered the detention pending investigation of four students on Friday on charges of leading protests at Cairo University without obtaining authorization from the Ministry of Interior, as is required by the newly enacted protest law.

The detained students have been charged with manslaughter and instigating an unauthorized protest.

The four detainees, at least two of whom are not students of the Cairo University, denied taking part in the protests, which lead to violent clashes between students and security forces and the death of a protesting engineering student Mohamed Reda.

The prosecution’s preliminary investigations, however, indicated that the four detained students instigated the demonstration. They were also found to have been throwing rocks at pro-military student protesters, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic news portal.

Under the newly established protest law, authorities are entitled to ban the protest if they think it constitutes a threat to public order. Those who violate the law by protesting without authorization may be subject to severe jail sentences.
