The Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation said ticket prices, which was previously set at 2 Egyptian pounds, will now begin from 3 pounds for nine stations, 5 pounds for 16 stations, and for a longer journey tickets will cost 7 pounds ($0.40).
However, disabled passengers will have a fixed price of 0.50 pounds.
The decision aims at cutting losses, according to Ali El-Fadaly, the chairman of the Metro Company.
El-Fadaly noted that the social aspect was considered, noting that subscribers to monthly, quarterly, and annual passes will still receive a lower-than-cost price, ranging from 2 pounds to 3.9 per trip.
