Armed assailants targeted a military checkpoint on the Ismailiya-Cairo Desert road on Sunday, killing one conscript and injuring three others, Al-Ahram’s Arabic website reported.
The assailants reportedly attacked the checkpoint with automatic weapons from two cars.
Security forces have closed off all exits on the Ismailiya-Cairo Desert Road in search of the attackers, who were last seen heading towards 10th of Ramadan City.
Since the popularly-backed ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July, army checkpoints have been under frequent attack, especially in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
On Thursday, interim President Adly Mansour extended the state of emergency in Egypt for two additional months. The state of emergency, originally slated for one month, was first imposed following the bloody crack-down on two pro-Morsi sit-ins on 14 August.
