Asian markets mixed on tariff news

Asian stocks experienced a mixed performance on Tuesday, as Chinese stocks surged following reports of an expected gradual US tariff increase under Donald Trump, while sharp declines in Japanese shares weighed on other regional equities.

The stocks experienced a significant decline in the previous session as investors re-evaluated the possibility of US interest rate cuts in light of the better-than-expected payroll data released last week.

China’s Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 index surged by two per cent, with the Shanghai Composite index also rising to 1.8 per cent. Additionally, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index saw a 1.5 per cent increase.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index dropped 1.7 per cent on Tuesday following a holiday break, with TOPIX declining 1.3 per cent.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 saw a slight 0.3 per cent increase. Investors are looking forward to the release of December employment data on Thursday. South Korea’s KOSPI remained stable amidst political turmoil in the country.
