Australia’s retail turnover up in June ’25

Australian retail turnover rose 1.2 per cent in June 2025, according to seasonally adjusted data released on Thursday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), marking the strongest monthly increase this year.

The June figure followed a 0.5 per cent rise in May and a flat result in April, driven largely by mid-year sales events and new product launches, particularly in non-food retail categories.

“Consumers are targeting sales events with a focus on value for big-ticket items like household furniture, bedding, electronic devices and TVs,” said Robert Ewing, ABS Head of Business Statistics.

Household goods retailing posted the largest gain, up 2.3 per cent, followed by other retailing at 1.9 per cent. Turnover in electrical and gaming stores received a further boost from the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which delivered record sales. Department stores and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailers also recorded gains of 1.9 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively.

Food-related spending rebounded after a previous decline, with food retailing rising 0.9 per cent. However, spending at cafes, restaurants, and takeaway food services edged down 0.4 per cent.
