Egypt’s BADR Petroleum Co. (BAPETCO) has launched a digital transformation programme to integrate artificial intelligence and automation across its operations, as part of the petroleum ministry’s sector-wide modernisation strategy.
The move is built on three pillars aimed at boosting efficiency, reducing costs and improving real-time decision-making while meeting health, safety, environmental and governance standards.
The first pillar focuses on workforce development, with engineers from technical and IT departments already trained at a specialist AI academy ahead of advanced courses to build an innovation-ready team.
The second targets AI and automation in core operations. Projects underway include AI analysis of well data, monitoring of subsurface electrical submersible pumps and predictive fault detection, which have already delivered cost savings and sustained output by resolving sucker-rod pump problems.
Planned upgrades include automation in planning, drilling and energy management, such as smart 3D reservoir modelling, optimised water injection, AI-driven well design, intelligent drilling rig systems and energy tools to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The third pillar will establish a centralised database integrating operational, information and engineering data to enable advanced analytics and faster decision-making.
