Bassem Youssef denounces ‘hypocrisy of developed countries’
Egyptian comedian and surgeon Bassem Youssef attacked what he called “the hypocrisy of developed countries in making climate pledges” on Tuesday.
According to Youssef, the developed countries come up with climate pledges, however they fail “to stop (messing) with the planet.”
Youssef made his comments on the sidelines of the COP28 in Dubai during a talk titled ‘Sustainable Personal Stories.’
The comedian recently went viral with his satirical but thought-provoking interview with Piers Morgan regarding the ongoing Gaza attacks.
During his show in the COP28, he made it clear that he is not a climate activist, nor was he out to offer “serious solutions” to climate problems.
“I’m a comedian,” he said with all frankness, adding: “I don’t know about world peace or solutions to climate change. My role is to make fun of a situation.”
He was then asked by a journalist in the audience: ‘How do you find humour in a broken world?’
Youssef then said “the fact that we’ve been going around for 28 years and not getting a consensus on how to stop [messing] the planet is itself the real comedy.”
The Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an annual gathering of world leaders in which they pledge to combat climate change.
