Bechtel eyes a master contract for Cairo’s sixth Metro line – minister

Egypt is rushing ahead with plans for an expansion of its metro and railway networks and will sign soon agreement with U.S. construction firm Bechtel Corp to implement Cairo’s sixth metro line, its transport minister said, according to Reuters.

Speaking at an event in Cairo hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham) on Monday, Kamel al-Wazir said his ministry is working on a memorandum of understanding with Bechtel for feasibility studies and implementation of the $5 billion, 30 km sixth metro line adding that and agreement has been reached ‘’just yesterday’’.

Egypt had lined up finance for the metro line from Canada, America, Britain, France and Japan, the minister added. He did not give its route, but reports have said it will run east of the Nile from north to south.

This is just the latest on a really long list of rail projects the government has unveiled in recent weeks, most of which the Sisi administration expects to wrap up by 2024, Wazir suggested.
