BlackBerry services which were affected in the afternoon on Friday, were restored within a few hours. Research in Motion, the maker of the smartphones, took to social networking sites and later issued a statement confirming the services were up and running after the outage.
RIM, however, did not say how many customers were affected by the latest glitch, which spread across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The impact was negligible in the UAE with Friday being a holiday and offices shut for the weekend.
“Our apologies to any customers impacted by the BlackBerry service issue today,” RIM said in a statement. “We can confirm that services have been restored and are now operating normally.”
Earlier, the Canadian-based smartphone manufacturer took to Twitter and alerted users about the glitch, but did not give reasons on why it happened. “Some users experienced issues with BlackBerry services today. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. All services are now operating normally,” it said.
Last year, more than a million BlackBerry users across the world were affected by a major outage which lasted several days.
The company came under fire and offered free games and apps to unhappy customers in a bid to retain their loyalty.
Other glitches occurred in 2008, 2007 and 2006.
