BP to reoperate Egypt’s Anode Blocks firm in Ain Sokhna

The Egyptian Anode Blocks Company has signed a five-year agreement with British Petroleum Energia España (BP) to reoperate the anode blocks plant in Ain Sokhna’s free zone, which has been idle for two years. The partnership aims to revitalise the facility through essential maintenance, operational oversight of petroleum coke calcination, and enhanced production capacity.
BP is set to invest $20 million in the initiative, providing maintenance funding and technical support to ensure high-quality production standards. The company will also deploy specialists to oversee operations and enhance the plant’s output.

The project anticipates an annual output of 250,000 tons once a second coke cooler is installed, with guaranteed production of at least 200,000 tons annually. This output is projected to generate a net revenue of $97 per ton for the company.

Minister Shimey emphasised that the agreement aligns with the Ministry of Public Enterprise’s strategy to strengthen affiliated companies, boost production, and meet domestic demand while reducing import dependency. The plant’s reopening is expected to lower Egypt’s import bill for high-demand industrial products, particularly for aluminium manufacturers.
