A car bomb has exploded at the Third Police Station in North Sinai’s Al-Arish, a security source has said.
Death and injury tolls are yet to be announced but the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Al-Ahram Arabic news website, confirmed the injured had been taken to hospital.
An exchange of gunfire took place following the huge explosion, according to the same report.
Egypt’s army is fighting an Islamist insurrection based in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, which has heightened since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. The violence has mainly targeted security forces, killing hundreds.
Hundreds of alleged militants have been arrested or killed in the military campaign launched to combat the violence.
