Leading Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) members Amr Zaki and Hamdi Zahran were arrested on Wednesday, reported state-owned news agency MENA.
Ex-MP Amr Zaki, a prominent Muslim Brotherhood leader and secretary of the FJP’s Cairo Committee, was arrested in New Cairo, while Hamdi Zahran, a professor and a former MP on behalf of the FJP, was arrested in his hometown of Beni Sueif.
According to Al-Ahram Arabic news website, Zahran is accused by the prosecution of inciting the torching of state institutions on 14 August – the day two large protest camps demanding the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi were forcibly dispersed by security forces.
Dozens of Muslim Brotherhood leaders have been arrested since. Among the detainees are Morsi, Brotherhood spiritual leader Mohamed Badie and his second-in-command Khairat El-Shater. All face charges related to the incitement of violence.
