The Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and 14 of the group’s leaders were sentenced to life in prison on Monday for their role in deadly clashes in Giza following Mohamed Morsi’s ouster last summer.
The incident, known in Egyptian media as the Bahr Al-Azam case, stems from clashes on 15 July 2013 in the Giza district in which five people died.
Giza’s criminal court on Monday convicted the 15 Brotherhood members also on charges of terrorism, attempted murder, forming a mob to attack citizens and carrying weapons and illegal ammunition.
Brotherhood leaders Mohamed El-Beltagy and Essam El-Eryan as well as Islamic cleric Safwat Hegazy, known for his loyality to the group, are among those convicted.
Badie, the Brotherhood’s leader in Egypt, has faced a barrage of trials since Morsi’s ouster. He faces over 30 cases in court, on charges ranging from terrorism to inciting violence, and has already received life sentences and the death penalty.
