Cambodia secures $10.4-m Japanese grants for landmine clearance

Cambodia signed an agreement on Thursday to receive two grants totalling $10.4 million from Japan to support its landmine clearance efforts, as stated in a press release from the foreign ministry.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi signed a grant exchange agreement in Phnom Penh.

One grant of $8.3 million will enhance CMAC’s South-South Cooperation training capacity, while another grant of $2.1 million will fund a training complex and outreach facility, according to the press release.

Cambodia is heavily impacted by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERWs), with an estimated 4-6 million leftover from three decades of conflict that ended in 1998.
