Canada’s Mediterra to expand drilling operations in Egypt’s Sinai, Kom Ombo

Canadian upstream oil and gas company Mediterra plans to expand its operations in Egypt’s Sinai and Kom Ombo regions, deploying advanced drilling technologies to boost production and enhance efficiency in existing fields, the ministry of petroleum said Thursday.

The announcement was made during a meeting with Ihab Ragai, First Undersecretary for Production at Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026). Mediterra’s Director Memet Kont and country manager Helal Konsoua attended.

Mediterra plans to implement coiled tubing drilling, a modern technique designed to increase output, reduce costs, and optimise performance from current wells. The company also highlighted its expertise in horizontal drilling, which ministry officials said could significantly advance Egypt’s petroleum sector.

Ragai praised Mediterra’s approach, saying that integrating advanced technologies aligns with the ministry’s broader goals of enhancing domestic energy production, attracting foreign investment, and supporting new discoveries.

The expansion comes as Egypt seeks to strengthen its position as a regional energy hub, emphasising technological innovation to maximise production in key oil and gas fields amid global market volatility and rising energy demand.
