China boosts energy storage for green goals

China’s energy storage capacity has seen a significant expansion in Q1 as part of the country’s green energy transition efforts.

By the end of March, the installed capacity of new-type energy storage had soared to 35.3 gigawatts, marking a 2.1-fold increase from the same period last year, the National Energy Administration (NEA) reported on Monday, cited by Xinhua.

The northwestern regions have led this growth, contributing 10.3 gigawatts, or 29.2 per cent of the total capacity.

Earlier this year, the NEA launched 56 pilot projects, including 17 lithium-ion battery and 11 compressed air energy storage projects, some of which are now grid-connected.

The NEA plans to continue fostering technological innovation to further develop the new-type energy system.
