China box office sees sharp decline in ’24

China’s 2024 box office revenue dropped by nearly a quarter from the previous year, sending a blow to the struggling domestic film industry still reeling from the pandemic, official data showed on Wednesday.

The State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television reported that box office revenue reached 42.502 billion yuan ($5.82 billion), a decrease of 22.6 per cent from the previous year’s total of 54.915 billion yuan in 2023.

In addition, the box office revenue of domestic films amounted to 33.439 billion yuan, a decrease of 27.3 per cent from the 46.005 billion yuan earned in 2023.
